Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chambéry to Montgenevre

Flying into Chambéry en route to Mongenevre. As it’s a big group we would like to stock up at a supermarket before we start the climb into the mountains. Any recommendations without too much of a detour?

I assume you are hiring a car / van.

Which route are taking? Tunnel or Col? If going by the col du Lauteret (not always open during the winter due to snow / avalanche risk) then you could stop at Casino in Briançon here:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Casino+Supermarch%C3%A9/@44.9073816,6.6174043,15.46z/data=!3m1!5s0x4789e4ec47c11e9d:0x2ddd7d9a1a67d5fd!4m10!1m2!2m1!1ssupermarket+briancon!3m6!1s0x4789e4ed7a1b7275:0xef27c6c3e993667d!8m2!3d44.9044082!4d6.6293212!15sChRzdXBlcm1hcmtldCBicmlhbmNvbloWIhRzdXBlcm1hcmtldCBicmlhbmNvbpIBC3N1cGVybWFya2V04AEA!16s%2Fg%2F11clgm4wpw?entry=ttu

If going via the Fréjus Tunnel, which is the quicker route but has some eyewatering tolls and can have queues for the tunnel, then it is probably easiest to stop at Chamnord in Chambéry as the rest is autoroute to Italy. However any frozen stuff would tend to defrost.

https://www.chamnord.com/

Leave someone with your vehicle while shopping.

There is an Intermarche at the entrance to Modane which is relatively easy to find:

https://www.intermarche.com/magasins/10393/fourneaux-73500/infos-pratiques

and easy to get back to the tunnel.

Otherwise on the Italian side but someone else can advise.

Thank you. Don’t know the route as it’s mini bus hire x2. Will need to ask the company but great advice.

@davidof, any particular reason for this advice and does it only apply to Chamnord?

there are a fair few scrotes that hang around the big hypermarkets and target vehicles with anything visible in them. Chamnord is just below Chambéry's notorious corniche district. It is not the Bronx though, for that you want Grenoble, or Marseille

Personally I would not leave anything visible in a vehicle anywhere in France, so not just Chamnord. (it may be the same in the UK, Germany etc I don't know). No point starting a holiday with missing gear.

So you have a driver, or is it self-drive, and what day of the week?

If you have drivers and mini-buses booked all probability is that it's SnowCab who are based in Montgenevre and they will stick to the best route on the day depending on the weather and traffic conditions, but in all likelihood, they will go Frejus tunnel as they will have a carnet of tickets for that, and not bother with the Grenoble / Lautaret route especially if it's a Saturday, as around Grenoble is a real pain in the derriere and then even after Grenoble the road can be very very slow with all the ADH & LDA traffic.

If it's self-drive then I would still go Frejus, as the return fare is not too bad, especially if split with an obviously large group of people.

There is a big supermarket in Oulx that they/you can stop off, that's if it's open and you'll get all the stuff you need there.

Again if it's self-drive you can nip down the hill to Briancon midweek etc as it's only 25mins drive, though there are far better supermarkets than Casino!!!

Anyway I wouldn't bother about too much specific planning at the moment as too many variables, especially if flying into Chambery, which is just one potential hic-cup Laughing

The easiest and simpliest way to reach Montgenèvre is from Turin Airport. Also, Chambery Airport could be challenging during winter.....

We have drivers and it’s a Saturday. We had booked flights to Turin with Ryanair from Edinburgh. We were very happy but a few weeks ago got the dreaded cancellation e mail. They withdrew that route completely for the whole winter. We were lucky to find another direct flight to Chambéry with BA this time and a good price. Eh oh! all will be well.

If you know the route you’re taking it’s also easy enough to set up an online account with one of the French supermarkets (probably intermarche or Carrefour in the Maurienne valley en route to frejus tunnel) and place a drive (click and collect) order, so not much hanging about for a big group of people.

I would definitely do the Frejus tunnel route. We have stocked up in intermarche in Modane before which is just before the tunnel.

However it depends how much space you have to carry the food as well as skiing luggage.

In resort there are a couple of small supermarkets in the main village and the cocci market in the obelisque area. I like the cocci market but it can be expensive

Yes but only on Sunday. Our accommodation is Sat to Sat. Also we feel it’s more risky when there is only one flight a week. It’s a matter of weighing everything up and direct flights are a priority.
