Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Things I don’t get about (other people) skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
What priorities do other people have for ski (etc.) trips that leave you completely bemused and flummoxed?

Two to start us off:

‘Après’’. I’ve never been anywhere where you can’t find a drink and some company after a day on the slopes, if that’s what you fancy. Drinking silly amounts of poo-poo, overpriced beer to the accompaniment of poo-poo, overly loud music didn’t appeal when I was a student and still doesn’t appeal two decades later: I love skiing, & if I’ve spent all that money on getting to the slopes, I want to be sliding down them feeling pretty good. I’m all for a nice dinner and some good wine, but what’s the appeal of ‘party resorts’? Are they for people who don’t really like being on snow? Have I missed something here?

The widespread obsession with resorts’ piste lengths above all else. No two runs down the same piste are the same, & I’d much rather spend time doing multiple runs of pistes I really enjoy (for assorted reasons) than rule somewhere out because I might have to ski the same run more than once.

What don’t you get about others’ ski preferences? What quirks do you have? What do you hate (or are indifferent to) that others seem to love, or vice versa?

To clarify: I’m not trying to poo-poo on other people’s preferences; I think it’s great that we all want different things from a trip to the mountains. I’m just interested in exploring those differences (albeit from a perspective of incomprehension!)

I'm with you with regard to preferences, but I know many people that absolutely love to party as well as ski. I'm not sure I need to understand, I'm happy to accept that we are different. However, being able to hear the Folie Douce from two mountains away is just offensive to my whole being and completely takes away my enjoyment of skiing while within earshot.

I get them all and I'm immensely grateful that people are different as they help fund the resorts and flight services etc where I go to enjoy the things I do.

Apres a good band or an "experience" at the Folie Douchebag or Mooser or wherever can be a fun experience (if only from a people watching perspective) and good to contrast genuinely wee wee poor apres (most US resorts) with.

Piste lengths is an odd one I admit but I understand some people geek out on tick lists and or the "travel around" bit of skiing so I'm unlikely to persuade them that the right terrain served by a single slow chair is easily superior.

(BTW the Folie I'm most familiar with in Val T has an incredibly engineered sound system with amazing focus and very little spillover you're either in theDUMF...DUMF..DUMF zone or you're 10m to the side and hearing very little.)

I’ll add one: taking curry pastes/powders on self-catering trips. For me something of the pleasure even of a self-catering trip is eating local food (even if that’s supermarket quenelles). I love a nice curry (I’m cooking one tonight, indeed), but it’s the last thing I’d want to eat on a ski trip (much as I wouldn’t really want to eat tartiflette outside the Alps)!

Agreed. It's "in your face" rudeness.

Smoking on a chairlift is pretty rude, too. Folk can enjoy their skiing in any way they like, provided that way doesn't detract from other people's enjoyment.

Enjoying loud Austrian apres and skiing a full day are not mutually exclusive.
The fact that you can have a lively drink or 2 straight off the slopes means you can get a bit of atmosphere without needing to stay up late.

'Expert' pistes. I don't get the attraction of survival skiing down bullet hard, steep and narrow black runs that some people seem to need on their criteria for a good ski resort. Put a foot of powder on top of it and I'm all in, but if there's no fresh then I'd far rather be on a cruisey red that you can lay proper carves on without hitting 90mph.

Very Happy

I’ve never had a problem getting that one, because from the very beginning lunch was an integral part of the ski day for me. I have fond memories of doing the infant-school work we’d taken with us while my parents skied in the mornings, then skiing together after a nice lunch, either in the flat we stayed in or out.

Even now it’s rare that I won’t sit down for a meal. I mean, I ‘get’ why people might prefer just to eat a sandwich on the chairlift; it’s just not my preference! (That said, I won’t drink until I’m at least on my way back off the slopes.)

Young males who think it's entirely reasonable to ski or board with an excuse for music (ie thumping, bumping noise) blaring from a backpack at nightclub volume.

How do they think it's okay to subject other people to their awful taste in music? And at ear splitting volume too.

Last year in Austria, we even saw (and heard, of course) a skier with a big speaker strapped to his back rolling eyes Naturally, it was blasting out complete cr@p...

Not interested in apres, but if it floats your boat, go for it. It is your holiday. I just stay away from places where I could come into conflict with heavily intoxicated snow riders, eg the piste section leading to Mooser.

If people want to drink all afternoon and night, and cannot get up in the morning, well that is a bonus. They are helping fund the lifts (etc), without crowding the slopes. That said, I wonder why some of those people go to ski resorts. Is it just to get some sort of bragging rights about being a skier and dropping the name of the resort in conversation??? Perhaps they might actually be happier going to some party island where they can literally drink all day?

Despite what I said above, I may well would enjoy this… https://www.stantonamarlberg.com/en/events/winter/new-orleans-meets-snow. It would be very different to listening to Sweet Caroline, surrounded by a bunch of very pissed twenty-something year olds, with the odd 50-something year olds, in stained white skivvies and yellow pants, trying to pick up the aforementioned twenty-something year old girls. Loads of stuff.

And caveat I, of course, respect everyone's right to be different.

A restaurant lunch I do not get. For several reasons. 1) the time it takes 2) the faff (undressing/dressing) 3) worrying about my skis getting nicked 4) going out skiing after a big meal. I was once with an off piste group and it was a bit whiteoutish. So the guide suggested we have a proper lunch. It was nice and all but even then the 4 issues above all came into play.

Apres, my wife and most of my ski buddies aren't into it. Personally I don't mind a swift couple either immediately after or later on. But I can take it or leave it. Certainly not a central part of the planning. And as above you can always find somewhere.

Ski in, ski out, I do get. It's not that I wouldn't go somewhere that isn't but I do love walking out the ski room and having at worst a short walk to the lift.

Getting rat @rsed. This isn't central to me either. I did it once and missed a bluebird day.

People do go on ski holidays for all resorts. And to be honest those that do it for a pootle, social, long lunches, etc. are doing me a favour. So I salute them.

I don't like cigarette smoke but I have no problem with people smoking on the lifts.

I don't care if I can hear the Folie Douce

I don't mind people playing music in their back packs, I'm just jealous that I'm too old to be such a tit.

I feel better skiing with a hangover after a cracking good night out than if I'd had a boring, early night.

+1

I find you can get more 'skiing' done in a small quiet resort than a large busy one. Queuing for lifts isn't most people's idea of skiing, and constantly dodging other skiers isn't my idea of the sport either.

Probably just because they are traversing a section to get somewhere else. We all do on roads and tracks linking one part of a resort to another

Rucksack, hat, gloves, buff. As I say, I don't have a ski lock but if I did that would just add to the faff. I am bit of a hypocrite - as I sometimes go into a picnic hut and do this. Although, don't lock skis, usually you can put them somewhere visible. It's not the only factor it's just one of several.

I think if I had a place in the mountains and was retired I would do it occasionally.

When we've skied in a ski in, ski out place e.g. Flaine we've typically gone back to the apartment to make lunch (say bread, ham, cheese, salad, yoghurt, beer) boots off, skis in locker. Maybe 1.5 hours. But we've rarely stopped for a drink on the piste so skied for up to 6 hours in the day. That's enough for me, especially now at my age. Hardly ever on first lift but have skied down just ahead of patrol occasionally. Aprés? Whatever floats your boat. A long time ago, spent several evenings attempting to play bridge with a very bright IBM manager and others in hotel in Madonna di campiglio. Always go for cheese fondue and fancy crêpe one night when in France. That Strava thing - easy to get into without meaning to. I use it for walking and cycling. GoPro? Don't have one. I also get fed up trying to see the bumps in flat light or if it's snowing - bit fair weather really.

When did snowheads become such a group of whingers?
Apre, why not? I enjoy skiing past mose/KK etc seeing a few hundred people enjoying themselves, sometimes if snow poo-poo i may even join them for a beer.
Skiers/boarders playing a bit of music out there rucksack, I normally only encounter this in lift ques. Deep down I actually enjoy listening to a tune..
Out of control skiers, unfortunately we was all there once. Part of learning.
Gopros, tried it if my skiing was good enough I would probably still be filming it to get me through a boring summer night.

Only thing I don't understand when it comes to winter holidays is people who have never tried it for the reason I don't like been cold. They are missing out so much.

Yes, I have a friend who proudly declares he skied the Swiss Wall despite having done so falling every 5 meters and sliding on his back bottom. Having been witness to the spectacle I think he actually skied about 50% of it.

Haha! 100% agree with this! The people who have a go at people who have a speaker in their backpack...are you serious, just get on with life...ski away once you are able if it offends you so much! So many of these things are part of being a person and part of the population of the world that makes us all different. Heh. I do well recall "doing" mogulled-up black runs like that without actually falling by employing a simple technique of traversing as far as poss on the rut line, then sitting down on a bump and swinging my legs round to face the other way. Repeat until done. This when I had just a couple of weeks' experience under my belt, but was happy to admit that getting down the run like that was not the same as skiing it.
