Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Trip to ITALY with short transfers advice?

 Poster: A snowHead

Looking to try Italy with the wife for 4 days in March. We have skied in France a lot and Austria bit. Any advice on which resorts in Italy are good with easy transfers? We like lots of piste available as we cover lots of miles. We did St Anton last year and it was very quick to get to.

@redthunder, You could fly to Venice and get a coach transfer to Cortina d'Ampezzo with Cortina Express. Great scenery, expertly maintained pistes and good value mountain restaurants. Apart from the ski slopes of Cortina itself there's a new gondola link to the nearby lovely ski area of Cinque Torri. You can also do the Hidden Valley run (referred to by the tourist office as the Armentarola piste) from the top of Lagazuoi.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

In my experience the resorts are usually a bit further from the main airports.

Closest main airport to resorts is probably Turin which is pretty close to the Aosta resorts (Cervinia, Courmayeur, Champoluc, Gressoney, Pila) and I think a few other areas in that corner of Italy (all less than two hours)

Milan area airports a bit further away from resorts (2 - 3 hours depending on which airport and which resort, Malpensa is closest to Aosta, then Linate, then Bergamo), though Passo Tonale in the Western Dolomites isn't too far from Bergamo (maybe two hours)

Venice is about two hours from the Eastern Dolomites. I think there may be a train line of use here.

Verona also about two hours from some Dolomite resorts. Again, there may be a train line here.

If you can get to a regional airport, like Bolzano, its very close to the Dolomites (less than an hour to some resorts) but you will almost certainly have to get a connecting flight to get there

Via Lattea resorts are only about an hour from Turin and I think you can also get to the Dolomites in about 1.5hrs from Innsbruck.

shortest would probably be the resorts North West(ish) from Turin.
Problem I find with Italy are the flight times. Especially inbound.

Sauze worked for us from Turin, had a great time - lovely village great restaurants and apres ski. Yeah some of the lifts are old but hey ho....

It very much depends on what airport(s) you can get to! Start with that question (answer) …

Italian resorts near the big cities are (naturally) busy at weekends. If you can do your 4 days between Monday and Friday it would make a big difference. Car hire in Italy is generally cheaper than Geneva or Austria.

I would recommend Val Gardena or it’s neighbouring resorts, 1.5 hours from Innsbruck and endless pistes

I’d definitely recommend Via Lattea. We’ve been a few times in the past ten years, fly into Turin on a (very) early flight out and each of the times we’ve done it we’ve been on the slopes between 12 and 1 (this year was a record for us, skiing by around 1145). From memory we paid 390 euros for a return minibus airport transfer, we stayed in Sauze each time which is around 1 hour 15 by taxi, I’d also happily give staying in Sestriere or Montgenevre a go which are about 15-20 minutes more but more snow-sure on the lower slopes. This may be more appealing depending on when in March you decide to go (late March in Sauze can get pretty iffy, the village is only at around 1500m and the other end of Via Lattea gets the best of the snows).

@pam w, that depends on the resort. Monterosa Champoluc/Gressonney are ~1hr from Turin 90 mins from MXP and outside of school hols really aren't very busy at other weekends.

For private transfers to/from Val Gardena consider Viaggi Gardena - a Somerset lady and her Italian husband.
