Poster: A snowHead

Heading to Cham next season, only for 3 days skiing, and for one reason or another that I won't bore you with, MIGHT have a day away from the family. Anyone know what the likelyhood of getting a guide mid season to do the Vallee Blanche at the drop of a hat is? By which I mean, the next day... Or... do I need to get a grip and plan a separate trip?
At the rate its melting, if I don't do it soon I never will!

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@vipa66, got a feeling there's public group guiding you can just join up with via the guides shop.
Others will be along to confirm if that is correct though no doubt

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I used https://www.chamonix-guides.com/en a few seasons ago. Saw the weather was going to be sunny and popped my head in the office (opposite tourist office) and booked the next day.

If the weather is good and it hasn’t just dumped a ton of snow you should be able to just call the Cham guides office and join up with a group. Definitely worth doing if you get a nice weather day! Alas it’s a longer schlep out than it used to be but that’s only going to get worse

How long is the walk anyway?

The walk accross the arete is about 200m. The ski down, about 20km with some foot slog included at the bottom end

@vipa66, it's "down" the arête ... and rather a lot of slog at the bottom.

I think it is over 400 steps up to the gondola at the end and feels more.
However, unless I am very much mistaken that is all consigned to the past from December 2023 when the new gondola is due to open. You lose out on a third of a mile of skiing over glacial rubble to be whisked up to the train in effortless luxury.
I can't wait.
