Le Sambuy near Annecy is on ebay, bids are currently at 1000 euros
but all is not quite as it seems, this is what the description says
Quote: |
Dear fans of insurmountable challenges and disastrous adventures,
We have a proposition that's sure to win you over: La Sambuy resort is now available for sale, to the highest bidder of course! Do you dream of getting involved in a business that's doomed to failure? Look no further, this is the opportunity for you!
The once vibrant and popular resort of La Sambuy is now in decline, but we're offering you the priceless chance to take the reins of this impending disaster. Imagine taking on the challenge of managing faulty lifts, dilapidated infrastructure and subsidies that evaporatefaster than the snow in spring.
By acquiring this failing resort, you will have the unique opportunity to:
1. Ignore the wishes of the local population: You'll have the privilege of breaking the hearts of all the people who love their mountain. You will be able to ignore their voices that are being raised to save this precious heritage, and take unilateral decisions without consulting anyone.
2. Testify to your disastrous management: You'll have the privilege of managing mass redundancies and causing a social shockwave. Imagine the pride you'll feel as you confront the employees who have dedicated their lives to the station and send them home with a look of despair in their eyes.
3. Astronomical costs: Get ready to open your wallet to dismantle the old and failing facilities. There will also be hefty bills to pay, as you'll have to cover the cost of demolishing and restoring what was once a jewel in the crown.
4. Assume abandonment and disinterest: Be prepared for the desertion of visitors who will turn their backs on this once attractive destination. Hotels and local businesses will close their doors, leaving behind an atmosphere of sadness and desolation.
5. Write your name in the annals of failure: Your name will go down in history as the person who led to the closure of a mountain resort, causing an economic and social disaster. You'll be able to take pride in being the person who shattered the dreams and attachment of an entire community.
So seize this golden opportunity! Show the world your ability to turn a popular place into a desolate wasteland. Ignore the people's love and attachment to their mountain, and prepare to face the consequences of this disaster once the contract is signed.
Note: if you don't want this scenario, come along to Simon Berger Park on Wednesday 14 at 6pm. |
Le Sambuy lost 450,000 euros in 2022. The mayor of Faverges-Seythenex, Jacques Dalex has decided to shut the once popular ski resort due to climate change. The closure will affect up to 75 jobs in the area. The lifts will start to be taken down following a noisy council vote last night. Locals worry that skiing in the Bauges will soon be a memory with le Semnoz next on the list, following the closure of Planpalais and Aillons-Margériaz 1000[1]

What's wrong with a bit of pragmatism from the Mayor?
Other low / less popular resorts have closed because they have become unsustainable.
Why is le Sambuy different?
There's a difference between "Locals worry that skiing in Bauges will soon be a memory"
and "Locals happy to stump up half a mil every year to keep it going".

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Democratic vote after informed debate closes ski resort due to it being financially unsustainable. Small group of entitled skiers expect local council to cover 1/2 million euros each year so they can ski.
It's sad, but trying to keep the resort open is just throwing good money after bad. With a base at 1150m the future doesn't look good. Financially I'm sure there are more pressing needs right now.
I suspect the protestors have no interest in actually stepping up and putting their own money behind it. There are probably some options if motivated enough (e.g. put a cabin on the back of the pistenbully and take people up and down on that as a kind of cat ski area).

Pity. If €0.5m were the ongoing shortfall to come up with every year (although I guess some of that would also be ticket revenue from interested parties and maybe need for capex) I wonder how much that would be per head for the interested parties to stump up per head per year to have their own resort run as a co-op.

If it's being funded to 0.5m Euros a year the question would be if that is coming back into the community/region.
I noticed on one of the reviews it talks about how few people are there. People love quiet ski resorts but economically it doesn't make sense and isn't sustainable. So be careful what you wish for.

Slightly off subject but if I remember correctly you could hire Col d'Ornon by the day for about 2,000€ ? That was the higher part with the black run I think.

Really sad. Great little station with some genuinely great terrain accessible.
Have been up summer and winter, and is the focal point of the surrounding villages, the loss to the area will be far in excess of 450,000 p/a but I get that the money does have to come from somewhere

Whilst I agree that this ski resort seems financially unsustainable I'd just point out that having a base at 1150m doesn't make a ski area automatically problematic. For example the base station and town of Alleghe is at exactly 1000m (of course the run down to the base station has snow cannon coverage).

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

It would be really sad to see this go. As mentioned above some great off piste to be done off the lifts here, banc de linguale is really cool. Sadly, the current run of winters with reasonably poor snow at sub 1500m altitudes will probably nail the coffin shut…

You know it makes sense.

It would be more useful to set up a crowdfunding website.

They need 1000 people willing to put in 500 dobs pa, each year. Do they even have that number of unique skier visits? Answer to that should probably tell you all you need to know about viability.
