Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Advice on changing the date for my yearly trip

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello all,

Each year I organise a trip week long European trip with my friends. I have been doing this for some time and the main factors are sure snow and avoiding school holidays. Usually I end up booking the 1st week in February. However these last few years the peak of the snow season seems more and more to be March not February. I'm thinking of picking 1st week of March instead.

What are peoples opinions on this?

This gives you an idea of which school holidays occur when...

Note that French school holidays impact French resorts massively compared to other countries, whereas German and Dutch Holidays impact Austrian resorts.

If you change dates, you might find that your old week has epic snow.... You know how these things go!

@turboblackbeard, in an “average” season, whatever that is, you are much more likely to find the biggest snow depths do actually occur in March, plus longer days, and more temperate weather. You however need to balance that against the increased probability of softer/slushier snow, and perhaps rain, due to the warmer weather. It is crapshoot - put your money down and roll the dice. Very Happy

Thank you Klamm that chart is super helpful. Best dates look to be 9th March or 3rd of February.

I am well aware that if I go for March, February will be amazing and visa versa. Though the trend at the moment to me seems later seasons....

Ulmerhutte - the other factor in going later is as you mentioned, longer days. It would be nice to have a little more time for chilling on the slope without eating into ski time.

I'm not sure you will. The lifts may close a little bit later - after 17:00 but the pistuers will still sweep the slopes and get you back to the villages long before sunset.

School holidays are bit later in france next year so the start of March will still have two regions holidaying. Mid March (after 10th) may be a better choice.

And of course the usual week will have better snow. That is just how the universe works. However I've always thought of March as being the peak snow month of the season in the French high altitude resorts I frequent.

We tend to go March and the extra light is good for a walk round the village after skiing more than extra time on the slopes.
