Poster: A snowHead
|
Hello,
We are a family of 5 (kids 14,12, traveling to Zurich, arriving this Wednesday. Kids are Beginner/intermediate. Looking for a family friendly destination with extremely easy slope access and hotel amenities. Ideally it’s 3 hours or less of train time from Zurich and doesn’t require car hire. We were going to go to Serfaus or Fiss, but we are concerned with the rain/weather. We’ve been to Wengen, Gstaad, and Zermatt. Would be nice to try something new, but open to those.
Thanks

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Flims ,Laax could be an option. Easy train ride out of Zurich about 2 hours then a ride on the post bus. Skiing is great and has good altitude.

@DandMfam, we skied in Switzerland, flying into Zurich, five years in a row from when our daughter was 14. The Swiss public transport system made transfers easy, and we found that despite its reputation for being expensive Switzerland actually was pretty competitive for half term week and a lot less crowded. Plus we love the country.
We went twice to Davos, once to Laax, and twice to Lenzerheide. For all you had to take the train from the airport to Zurich main station (Hauptbahnhof, abbreviated Hbf) and change. With Davos it was another change at Landquart to the RhB narrow gauge railway (straight across the platform as I recall), with Laax and Lenzerheide it was a train to Chur and then the postbus for the last bit. (The bus station is upstairs from the station in Chur, go out of the station towards the town centre and look for the escalators to the level above). The Swiss are very good at timing buses with train arrivals.
In terms of easy slope access it obviously depends on what accommodation you can book. But the famed Swiss efficient public transport system extends to ski buses, both Davos and Lenzerheide had circular services in both directions (like London's Circle Line) with reliable timing. In fact you needed to use the bus system because of the different points to access the ski area.
You could also go to Arosa, linked to the Lenzerheide area by a two-way cable car, all the way by train, there is a narrow gauge railway up from Chur.

@DandMfam, not sure any of the Swiss places are going to be any better weather wise than Serfaus. Serfaus tends to be a bit dryer than many places as it is in the "rain (snow) shadow" of the Arlberg. I dont disagree that the outlook looks to be fairly mild and possibly damp but not sure going to Switzerland helps in that. All the places mentioned above are good but if you are worried about snow conditions it might be worth thinking about Ischgl. I dont like the village (not sure "family friendly" is the correct description) but the ski area is excellent with easy access to a wide range of high altitude skiing (beginners area next to main lift at over 2000m with the area going up to 3000m). Access is from Landeck so the same train station as Serfaus.

@DandMfam, you said you've been to Wengen, but have you been to Mürren, that's another option.
