Hi.
Over the last 15 Feb half terms we’ve visited Flaine with the odd visit at Easter to Alp D‘Huez.
We are looking for a suggestions on somewhere different (we are normally creatures of habit).
So as a ‘out of the box’ decision we booked Grenoble for Feb 2024.
Family of 4 / intermediate cruising adults and skilled 17 and 22 year old.

Les Sybelles - 4th largest linked resort in France within easy travelling from Grenoble airport or The Maurienne valley resorts Valmeinier, Valloire, Valfrejus, Val Cenis or Sint Francois Longchamp linked to Valmorel
Plenty of skiing at all those resorts with relatively quiet pistes and cost effective lift passes.

You mean Grenoble airport? It is a long way from Grenoble itself and as said above more convenient for travel into the Savoie via Chambery but you'll have to see how you get to resort, not always easy.

@Halowa, There are a few resorts near the town such as Chamrousse (the scene of the skiing at the 1968 Olympics) and Les Sept Laux. Both are medium sized resorts that are not well known in the UK but I beleive popular with the Grenoblois. There are other tiny resorts in the Chartreuse. I suspect the traffic from the town to Alpe d'Huez and Les2Alps will make them hard to visit for a day trip.

Sorry for the confusion!
Yes, flying to Grenoble airport….
So resorts within a couple of hours.
Thanks for the help so far.

@Halowa, how big does the ski area need to be? Bigger / equal size than Alpe d'Huez / Flaine (which are similar sizes), or could it be smaller?
Lots of resorts within 2 hours of Grenoble (airport) meet the cost-effective description, but not many are as big as Alpe d'Huez or Flaine.

I know it’s a hike but we’ve considered ADH and Tignes.
TBH size isn’t that important, we enjoy each others company with apri-ski.
We aren’t experts BUT - we enjoy all runs except black (experienced intermediate)
G’teed snow is important so maybe at height?

@Halowa, there was some messaging earlier this season about the difficulty of renting cars at Grenoble. Something to think about.

If Feb HT shouldn't be any snow issues.
Going to Tignes from Grenoble would be nuts unless you had a specific desire for the place.
ADH not too bad and as creatures of habit would work for you.
As mentioned Chamrousse and Les Sept Laux pretty close.

OK...
- similar size to Alpe d'Huez: Les Sybelles
- a bit smaller: Valmorel, Les Deux Alpes, Valloire / Valmenier
- smaller still but still biggish: Chamrousse, Les Sept Laux
Not sure Les Sept Laux or Les Deux Alpes would be so suitable for you as they both lack extensive cruising runs
17 Feb - 3 Mar 2024 looks to be Grenoble half term, and Paris is 10-25 Feb, so all those weeks will be busy (especially the middle one).

Don't rule out Italy - bit of a schlep but Bardonecchia reachable, through the Frejus tunnel. Or other options.

Lots of good suggestions above, St Sorlin D'Arves would be a nice base, old village feel but part of the large Les Sybelles area. Saint Francoise Longchamps also would suit. You *shouldn't* have to worry too much about snow in Feb.

Serre Chevalier.
You get to drive through La Grave on the way.

IMO the best bang for buck ski resorts in France are the ones accessible along the French A43.
Les sybelles for size, valloire for village charm, orelle for backdoor access to Val Thoren, etc. Plus you still have Val Cenis, val frejus & St Francois Longchamp as options. Not sure Bardonecchia offers anything better (the italian side), than the french side - especially when you factor in the cost of tunnel.

Just the comparative lack of crowds at half term, really, is the main thing.

the easiest transfers from Grenoble are Les Deux Alpes, Alpe D'huez and Chamrousse.
The Les Sybelles sits behind ADH and then its the rest of the Maurienne.
L2A is the simplest transfer if using a company like Bens Bus - shortest and cheapest

Serre Chevalier (Monetier would be my recommendation for intermediate skiing back to resort) which is about 2.5 hours from Grenoble airport….(which, at half term, might be on the busy side!).
Masses of intermediate-level skiing, plus plenty of more challenging stuff, relatively easy to access off-piste (if needed), a lot of higher-level mountain access/uplift should the snow be a little sparse lower down (I wouldn’t expect that to be an issue in Feb), not the liveliest Apres scene, but enough, a great sense of travel along the valley, beautiful tree-lined pistes, less of a “resort” feel - more along the lines of traditional Alpine towns.

Thanks so much again for your help. I’ve started looking at different locations recommended.
We are all happy to ski in piste, nightlife isn’t that important, half a dozen pints and a pizza then off to bed by 9pm!
Ski in and out of resort is very much desirable…… Probably spoilt with Flaine.

Well, it's not the closest airport, but I have driven from Grenoble to Avoriaz & back, so if you want ski-in/out, that's a good option - where I'm off to in a few days (for the umpteenth time).

L2A and ADH have ski in ski out apartments, you just have to look for them
