Poster: A snowHead

Hi, does anyone have experience of car hire at Venice with guaranteed winter tyres, I’m due to be going to Canazei at the end of Jan 24 and would prefer to have the assurance of winter tyres rather than battling with chains.

I’ve never managed to get an Italian hire car with snow tyres, even when specifically pre-booked. This was from Turin.
Just got a shrug, sorry it’s not here/available/ crashed, only got one with summer tyres. Fortunately for away with it, but had one sketchy trip back from La Thuile.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@geoffknight, I booked a VW Tiguan with winter tyres in advance. The car was from the company Sicily by Car but I think I used the search site Rent.it rather than direct

Ridiculous that car hire companies let you pay for something with no intention of providing it (or even refunding you for that matter!).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

They don’t care. I can still picture an American’s face at the car rental opposite Naples central station when they were informed. ‘It doesn’t make any difference if you booked an automatic, we don’t have any here!’
Centre of Naples is not the best place to have your first go at ‘stick shift.’

I managed to order and get an Audi A4 Avant quattro with Nexen winter tyres direct from Hertz for a smidge over £200, for 8 days, from VCE. Half term 2018. Only holiday so far where booking direct with a big gun has looked significantly better value than via a consolidator.

+1 for Sicily by Car.
Reservation with winter tyres worked fine back in early February. Important to have them.
They also have a desk in the main multi storey at Venice Marco Polo, maybe 10 mins inside walk from arrivals.

One thing if getting hire-chains is to make sure they fit before leaving the VCE car park. One year we heard a very annoyed person shouting at the AVIS desk because when they needed chains, the ones supplied were for a fiat 500 and not a big Volvo.
