Welcome to Snowheads, @thebike1975. I'm a bit confused as to what your question is My son did first week of ski lessons in Austria, as a 9 year old complete beginner. The other kids - all German speaking, were little tiny things. My Nick towered above them. But he just got on with it - was really keen on learning to ski and actually rather good at it. He felt like a big boy. Though one day the lazy instructor sent him to escort one of the little ones back to the ski school (normally Nick came straight to our apartment). The ski school kept him prisoner and told him his Mummy or Daddy would have to come and pick him up. In vain did Nick, who at that point spoke no German, tell them that his Mummy and Daddy would NEVER come because they were waiting for him at home. After some frantic running around I did turn up, of course, to rescue him from captivity. My rusty O level German was not up to remonstrating with them about such sloppy procedures - I was just glad to have him back!!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ah you have made me laugh! Outrageous behaviour from the instructor! I suppose it wasn't really a question - more of a does he just have to do it and get on with it or should I stick the 8 and 11 year old in the private lessons for two mornings for 4 hours together? They are together in a group with Evo2 so I think they'll be fine, just me wanting to make sure they actually enjoy it after forking out so much cash for the holiday! And was also concerned they'd just get fed up with the 5 year olds crying or moaning about being tired (not that they're immune to that at 8 and 11...). Thanks so much for the reply!

In my experience 5 year olds just get on with it - as long as their parents aren't hanging around looking sympathetic.

I would never let a 9 year old go off on his own after a lesson with no responsible adult identified. It would be a complete failure of my safeguarding duties. Not only would it be wrong, but I would have all sorts of liability in that scenario.
@thebike1975, If it is a reasonably big ski school I would not overthink it. There will be quite a bit of swapping between classes and the school will work it out. And chances are your child will cope regardless. If you are worried email the ski school and see what reassurance they can offer you. It is also true that being the "grown up" in a class of smaller kids can be a bonus. I would co-opt him as my assistant, and likely he would get more attention and progress faster a s result. Most ski instructors are well used to managing this sort of situation and will find a way of making it fun for everyone.
