It’s really aimed at summer visitors for the experience. Apart from allowing those staying in Cervinia quicker access to one red run from the top of the Klein Matterhorn it doesn’t really offer much to skiers

Yes - it means that it will be possible to travel from Cervinia to Zermatt or vice-versa as a pedestrian. Plenty of far-eastern tourists will have it on their bucket-list, I'm sure.

One of the points it that it is a 3S lift, which get closed down less often than other designs.
It's not just aimed at summer though, but it is aimed at pedestrians. The overall revenues for the town and lift companies (Cervinia included) can increase if they can get pedestrians from Italy going over to Zermatt (not sure how many will go in the opposite direction, although I do enjoy a lunch at Testa Grigia)

It has often been commented that staying in Cervina isn't a great way to ski Zermatt on the cheap due to the frequency that the link shuts and also the time taken to get over. Would this new lift be likely to change that assessment significantly? I would love to ski Zermatt, but the price of accommodation is prohibitive for me

Talking to a hotelier in Zermatt he said they are expecting Asian tourists to do Milan - Cervinia - Zermatt, stay one night, then return. Not sure what Cervinia gets out of the deal. For non-skiers just wanting the experience it would be pretty special a trip like that.

No. The fastest way across to Zermatt will still be across the Theodulpass. The new cable car will still only go from Plateau Rosa which is on the Italian / Swiss border anyway. You can ski down to Trockener Steg faster than the new lift from Plateau Rosa to Klein Matterhorn and then down.
