Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

New Cervinia to Zermatt cable car link to open in Spring

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
The delayed completion of the incredible engineering feat that will see a fast and comfortable lift connection between Switzerland’s Zermatt and Italy’s Cervinia, via the Klein Matterhorn and one of the highest lift-accessed points in Europe, is due to open in spring 2023.

Completion of the 105m Swiss Francs project has been delayed by the pandemic and related issues.

The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing comprises the Matterhorn Glacier Ride lift up from Zermatt which opened in autumn 2018 and the new Matterhorn Glacier Ride II which will link Klein Matterhorn with Testa Grigia in Italy. The two lifts take only 13 minutes to make the crossing with large cabins each cable of holding up to 28 people.

Thanks for that Alastair. Some similarities with the Cairngorm Funicular debate perhaps ? Here is an article from 2018 referenced in the comments.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

It’s really aimed at summer visitors for the experience. Apart from allowing those staying in Cervinia quicker access to one red run from the top of the Klein Matterhorn it doesn’t really offer much to skiers

Yes - it means that it will be possible to travel from Cervinia to Zermatt or vice-versa as a pedestrian. Plenty of far-eastern tourists will have it on their bucket-list, I'm sure.

One of the points it that it is a 3S lift, which get closed down less often than other designs.

It's not just aimed at summer though, but it is aimed at pedestrians. The overall revenues for the town and lift companies (Cervinia included) can increase if they can get pedestrians from Italy going over to Zermatt (not sure how many will go in the opposite direction, although I do enjoy a lunch at Testa Grigia)

It has often been commented that staying in Cervina isn't a great way to ski Zermatt on the cheap due to the frequency that the link shuts and also the time taken to get over. Would this new lift be likely to change that assessment significantly? I would love to ski Zermatt, but the price of accommodation is prohibitive for me

Talking to a hotelier in Zermatt he said they are expecting Asian tourists to do Milan - Cervinia - Zermatt, stay one night, then return. Not sure what Cervinia gets out of the deal. For non-skiers just wanting the experience it would be pretty special a trip like that.

No. The fastest way across to Zermatt will still be across the Theodulpass. The new cable car will still only go from Plateau Rosa which is on the Italian / Swiss border anyway. You can ski down to Trockener Steg faster than the new lift from Plateau Rosa to Klein Matterhorn and then down.
