Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

First time solo skier looking for mid December european resort

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
(This is my first post). Hi - it looks like I'm having to go solo this December which is daunting. However, I'm keen to meet new people and socialise, go to a snow sure resort, not spend silly money on accommodation, but also enjoy myself. What would you guys suggest in terms of resort and type of accommodation. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. Flying from the Bristol.

Many thanks Very Happy

Welcome to Snowheads @Posset/ Look on the Action Outdoors website for UCPA holidays. Tignes would be a good resort for mid December.

Might be worth checking which UCPA centres are open in December before making such a recommendation, @pam w.

That's why I suggested looking at the website. The separate recommendation that Tignes is a good resort for mid December requires no qualification.

Spoiler alert: the only UCPA centre open in mid-December is Val d’Isère (Val Tho is also bookable from Dec 17 if you still count that week as ‘mid’). Before you book UCPA Val d’Isère, please ensure you know what you’re letting yourself in for.

@Posset, it might be helpful if you say more about what you’re looking for, on and off the slopes. I’m going solo (also flying from Brizzle) on two back-to-back Inside Out trips to Meribel (Dec 9–20], not sure if they’re full yet.

You might also find some useful suggestions on this thread.

@JayRo, Hi and thank you for the helpful responses so far. A bit more detail:
So the seek would be Saturday 16th December. I've been skiing 5 years in a row and so can get myself down most slopes though a black run has made me think twice. Been to places including Alpe D'Huez, Les Deaux Alpes (last year mid December luckily with plenty of snow before it all vanished!).
Just looking for people to socialise with probably off the slopes just so I'm not having a single-dad-dinner by myself. Hope that's not too cryptic!

I'm new to all of this travelling single so conscious of costs (supplements) and transfers from airports (as costs not split between the families group I went with).

Hope this all helps! Thanks again!

I suspect you'd enjoy the Inside Out courses. If it's a long time since you had any lessons you'd find it a revelation. Good value for the quality - but especially as a single traveller they are not cheap. I mentioned UCPA because you emphasised your tight budget. There are masses of reports on Snowheads about UCPA, almost all positive! For a single traveller on a tight budget their all-inclusive formulae are unbeatable.

@pam w, Hi Pam - thank you. Do I have to add flight costs and transfers and is that all set out on their web page? Is that shared accommodation etc? ... you can tell that I'm new to all of this!!!!! Thanks!

@Posset,

UCPA are akin to youth hostels. You'll be sharing sleeping accommodation with others.

https://www.action-outdoors.co.uk/activities/snow-sports/skiing/alpine-ski/

You will need to add on flights and probably transfer costs.

Hi - Just looked at UCPA but I'm over the 45 age limit and so their limited courses for that age group start later than mid December unfortunately. Thanks though!

@Posset,

Is it specifically the week before Xmas that you want to go because you want to be home for Xmas?

What is you budget?

Do you need lessons or a group to ski with or do you simply need people to socialise with off the slopes?

Hi @Posset, I am going on a week away with Apex Travel Ski Group on the 17th of December to La Plagne. There are other solos on the group (including myself). On the face of it, the price isn't cheap but it is an all inclusive set up , including drinks and ESF (French Ski School) group lessons if you want them at no extra cost Have a look here: https://www.asgski.com/la-plagne-2100 - there still seems to be some places.

Hi welsh flyer and mr blue - that week before Christmas only because of life stuff. That La Plagne trip looks good and would have to fly from Birmingham but not too much of an issue. Ski hire and social on top - but could easily spend more than that going elsewhere!

Have done ESF in Alpe D'Huez and were excellent especially as being pretty notice to start.

Fly Geneva, chambus to chamonix, stay at ski station -https://www.hostel-skistation-chamonix.com/hostel

You'll easy find people to ski with there.

The Brevent telepherique is only 50m away, that gives you easy access to the south facing Brevent and Flegere areas.

It's quite an easy option.

Hi folks, after a delay I've gone for 7 days at Passo Tonale in Italy. Just booked what I think is a great deal on Crystal Ski - flights, transfers, single room a minute from lifts, breakfast and evening meal, extended ski pass to include a day elsewhere, skis and boots all in for £995. On a budget and the resort looks fine for my level. Anyone been there? Hoping to hear good things!

@Posset,

I'm glad you've booked something.

For info about the resort put a posting in the "Resorts" section of the forum.

@Posset, that’s great Posset! Hope it goes well, looks like a great deal. I’ve used Crystal before but not as a solo so I’d be interested to hear how it goes as I may want to look into myself as an option in the future. You’ll need to report back!

Happy skiing.
