…I do NOT expect this isn February. I am supposed to be cold. It is supposed to be grim. I stood yesterday in the car park at Rosswald and instead of my Lange boots being more than a struggle to put on, they were soft and squidgy. And all because it was 10deg in the car park. Not minus 5 like 2010. It was like Easter. The top runs were a slush fest. My boots were folding like paper. Off piste was rubbish. This is not February weather. Spring skiing and it’s not Spring.

@valais2, I know. It sucks. I like spring skiing, but not in winter!
We are in Monterosa, off piste is a bust. We do seem to have been quite lucky with the weather as while relatively warm in the afternoon it’s been quite good on piste earlier. And ok snow higher up. Generally a bit colder than our usual haunts are in the Valais. But still not February weather!

@valais2, Had a chat with a guide and his group yesterday. They found some snow. Consensus was it was VERY hard work, long climbs and traverses for short pitches of downhill. And consensus was to not even think about using decent skis, hire or use your rock hoppers was the advice!
Disappointed for my daughter who is really getting into off piste and especially day tours. But wife and the boys are happy with the piste skiing. Spring tactics deployed of out early, ski hard with minimal stops then a late and long lunch (Italians specialise in that part thankfully!)

How old are the boots? Modern materials are, I believe, more stable over a wide temperature range.
I'm not sure if they publish data on such things, but Atomic's Grilamid & carbon seem to perform well over a wide range.
This is good on boot plastics.

In the TV coverage of the Chamonix World Cup slalom, racers were waiting to ski with their boots buried in the snow to keep them cold.

@phil_w, all you say is true … but regret the boots yesterday were up to date Lange RX110s - it’s just that it was Very Hot…
People keep on commenting on the hill - isn’t it nice and warm. Yes it’s warm but it is Not Nice.

@rjs, …yep…good spot…vital to have set and consistent flex in slalom (and GS) so v sensible to keep boots chilled - keeps the liners set too.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@valais2, You don't usually need to do it at the start of February.
I have done it plenty of times at the end of March.

Found loads of slush bumps and had a blast today. Also, lunch was a total joy on the sunny terrace. The heat detuned my 130 flex perfectly for the slush fest to come - result!
Love the snow you get not the snow you want. Zen and the art of skiing.....

You know it makes sense.

I like cold in winter and all the joys of spring skiing. There is nothing zen about it. It sucks when it is not cold in February. Full stop. And it’s a joy to ski in spring. Full stop. Right now we are skiing spring in winter, which sort of defeats the joy of spring skiing also.

I also like the Zen of skiing. But being tuned into the seasons is also very Zen - and I’ve been tuned into the mood of the mountains for many many years. And like Zikomo I sense that what’s happening now is very non-Zen…

Spring conditions in mid February do make one wonder whether there will be any conditions at all in Spring.

It's weird to be reading this when I was skiing in -12 or -10 nearly every morning last week, and it only got above freezing, just, on one day I think. I see it's warmer in Arabba this week, but still not spring-like yet.
