Poster: A snowHead
|
We have a group trip planned for March to Alpe d'Huez but being my first trip to the resort I'm not sure where we should be heading on the first day. Our apartment is based on the bottom quarter of Route du Signal near here: (Google Maps)
The group is very mixed ability so will likely split up but wherever we go but at least some of the group will need to head to a nursery slope
The rest will be happy enough to hit a green for a warm up run but will then be looking for something more blue/red
My thinking is we should probably trek over to the Les Bergers lifts to start and then figure things out or there seems another area near the DMC 1 lift but its hard to see which is actually easier to walk to or more appropriate.

Catch the bucket lift at the mid station just along the rue du Signal. Takes you to ski school meeting place and base of the DMC at Rond Point

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

You are in possibly the best resort anywhere for a genuinely mixed ability group - I go again on 4/2
Bucket lift and Alpe Express make cross town access easy. Best nursery slope sits to side of Bergers by Ave Rif Nel - two drags - Rif Nel.
And it is great for progression with greens all around - next step Rif Nel Express and then the greens become slightly steeper off Jeux.
Then just go higher for blues, red, blacks.
There are a couple of catches - the reds to Vaujany are steep in parts. But it is a great place with a feeling of travel if you go to Auris, Oz, Villards, Vaujany and Montfrais.
Good food everywhere too.
Hope you like it

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'm staying at Rond Point again this March and will head down to Rifnel express or Romains for a little leg warmer before heading off. I also generally get out a bit quicker than the rest of the group so have a couple on there while they mess about!
For the beginners in your group there are loads of easy green runs all over the place close to Rond Point

The other nice thing is that you can ski from the bucket lifts down to Alpes Express if you need to get to Bergers, there is a ski road through town. We normally stay in a s/c on route du Signal and my son and I would be able to get there quite quickly.

Is this flat or does it descend, and in which direction? Half of the group including myself are dirty snowboarders so a flat ski road is sadly another walk for me.

The very top at the end of the buckets it is flat-ish for about 75-100metres although a bit less of actual walking as you will have some momentum. It’s then pretty downhill until the very end where you will need to walk the last 30-50m over the bridge to the start of Alpes Express to Bergers. Just depends on how much momentum you have. If you have to go to Berger, that route is quicker than going to the top of the buckets at DMC and then skiing down after walking around the DMC. Hope that helps.

Perfect, thank you!
On another note, does anyone know the situation regarding free access to the nursery slopes? I understand some of them are free but you still need to pick up some sort of pass card?

The Grenouille, petit rifnel, petit école free passage and no ski pass needed.

But as one of the best progression resorts in the alps, it does make buying a lift pass from day 1 worthwhile, as they could feel confident enough for Jeux and the paid greens from morning 1 - that is the joy of the place

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks Alpinebear
Regarding the free slopes - It would be a money saving effort for anyone that does, I agree it's probably a false economy but that will be up to them.
