Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Serre Chevalier Homeward Bound Options

Hi

We are currently in Serre Chevalier- snow and weather are fantastic.

We leave on Sunday to drive home, when we arrived last week we came in by Grenoble and then over the Col Du Lauteret. We have this option for the drive home but it seemed a long way from Grenoble to the resort. Is it worth considering going back via Montgenevre and the Frejus Tunnel? If so does our payage duffur (ATMB one) work for the tunnel toll and how much is it?

Regards to all

Much faster via the Lautaret, no tolls till Grenoble and no, your doofer doesn't work for the Frejus tunnel!

@KenX, @Griggs, aaaahhhhh but if you go Frejus you don't go to Grenoble but blast past Chambery, avoiding the Grenoble headache and head Lyon and then the normal A6 or the other route which I've recently taken and is not so busy, A40 direction Bour en Bresse

The only hassle is that you will pay extra for Frejus and I'm not too sure what the amount is, but could be worth it to avoid Grenoble on a Saturday?

Many thanks for the quick replies. We actually leave at 8am on Sunday morning - I’m assuming that we would miss any Grenoble traffic at this time (it was shocking heading the other way last Sunday late afternoon)?

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

KenX is right, don't go via the Fréjus unless you rob a bank first. SC is a long long way from anywhere, you just have to accept that, the locals are always moaning about it being 'enclaver'.

You can buy a reduced price pass for Fréjus if you have an accommodation booking of more than 2 nights or less than 21, but I think it is only valid if you travel from France to Italy on the outbound trip. https://booking.serre-chevalier.com/tunnel-du-frejus/frejus-tunnel-pass.html

At least serre chevalier is on the col road. It stings even more if you are going further beyond and effectively have to drive up two mountains and not have the children in the back being sick! My conclusion has been to now as long as the col is clear it is a no brainer. The other options are either expensive and longer or just longer (assuming weather is good)

@Griggs, you're still going to pick up the traffic coming down from LDA and then ADH, if I was you I'd aim to leave at 07:00, and get ahead of most of them, but there again it is a Sunday.

Luckily it's not next weekend, though then traffic will be coming up the other way and the bulk of it on the Saturday.

Left Monetier at 8.30 this morning. Already down past the Barrage de Chambon. Traffic very light for Saturday morning.

Many thanks, it's 15€ cheaper compared to the regular price I found in a French pdf file (annexed below)
In the initial text they ask for car registration number. With a rental car, can it be left blank?

Hi all

Thanks for all the advice. We left at 8.30am and went over the Col Du Lauteret to Grenoble with no issues.

Still managed to miss our Eurotunnel slot due to a slightly longer lunch stop and then tyre pressure issues!

Had a cracking time in SC - 5th visit and we will be back again at some point.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

@Griggs, we had a slight delay on Saturday when our fuel filler cap jammed. Hubby had to force it before we ran out in the end. Not sure if it was just frozen. At least we weren't heading for Eurotunnel and just to our overnight stop.

Take the Frejus Tunnel…it’s a particularly fine specimen in the tunnel genre…. Toofy Grin Laughing

Interesting factoid re the Frejus tunnel: when you get to the centre of the tunnel, the temperature is 25 degrees pretty much all year round due to its 13km length and the fact it's buried under a mountain! Came through last week, -8 degrees outside and stuck my hand out of the window at the centre to warm air Very Happy
