Unfortunately, I crashed at high speed on the pre-christmas PIPAU bash (I was working on speed control and thought I was getting somewhere, but clearly not).
I have just had a private MRI and to quote the summary, it said:
"Undisplaced fractures of the posterior LFC and lateral tibial plateau as described. High-grade sprain of the superficial and deep MCL. Low-grade sprains of the ACL and LCL."
Has anyone had a similar injury and what is the estimated recovery time? I'm seeing someone at the fracture clinic next week but kind of wanted an idea so I could let my work know if it was good or bad news.

Youch! Your poor leg - but I know that feeling of immense stupidity all too well. Thanks for the link - I guess I'm taking a very un-fun sabbatical from work for now then

@The Lady Vanishes, what does a "high grade sprain" mean? it sounds like a rupture - ask about that at the fracture clinic - it might be more troublesome than the fracture

@holidayloverxx, no idea, but on the bright side it's not a tear! I'll ask at the clinic. Thank you!

@The Lady Vanishes, and see if your travel insurance pays for private physio...you will need it

Just read your injury to my OH and he said "was this you posting?". The only difference being my was at a comically low speed but a very similar ACL / MCL / undispaced TPF / LCL sprains cocktail, although on the last day of the EoSB a few years ago rather than at the start of the season.
I was non-weight bearing on crutches for about 10 weeks and had several weeks further of physio but was skiing again the following season. I have been significantly more cautious since and to this day wear a donjoy brace while skiing as the hyper extension from catching an edge gives me the fear. I suspect I could alleviate a lot of this if I upped my overall fitness though as have no issues while running for example.
Best wishes for your recovery!

Thank you @always29! Not looking forward to so long on crutches, but it's worth it if I can ski next season

Not the exact same injuries, but on April 11th 2022 I had a bit of an accident and ended up with a communicated complex fracture of the patella....basically I smashed my kneecap into 6 separate bits. I had the knee rebuilt with a plate and 13 screws. I was in a full leg brace for 10 weeks.
I had my first day on skis this week, so 8 months and 2 weeks after the injury.
the key to recovery is physio and exercise, if your insurance isn't paying then make sure you get a physio who has access to a gym rather than just an office, it makes the world of difference. Also if you are not already join a gym, if you're at physio once a week you should be in the gym at least 2 / 3 times in addition to that.
but will some effort you will be back on skis in December 2023.

That sounds painful! But good to hear you're skiing again, that's the most important thing. My insurance isn't paying, but I've found a good physio who deals with knee injuries and they are attached to a Virgin Active gym which is a bit more classy than my gym group membership but I figure if I'm paying privately I need all the benefits!

Unfortunately I think high grade sprain will be at least a moderately severe tear. You need a professional to look at MRIs and advice rehab

@peanuthead, thank you. I saw a knee specialist yesterday and he said it was a relatively minor fracture and that I'll be back to normal within three months including physio. He said if it was a major tear it would have shown up on the x-ray which it didn't so I'm pretty happy!

@The Lady Vanishes, I had lateral TPF and MCL strain in 2013. Did it on 1st April, plate and screws, skiing from November. I did a blog in apres. MCL still hurts a bit sometimes. It's all about the rehab

Do check this thread.
A meticulous approach to recovery and deserved a good outcome given the effort
