Poster: A snowHead

Evening Snawheids,
A mate and I have booked for 4 nights in Mayrhofen next to the Pekerbahn gondola for the last 4 days in February, Saturday to Tuesday ski days. We've never skied here before but it is one of the big names so needs appraisal and suits travel requirements.
Looking at the map, runs at Mayrhofen itself look a little short. Is there anywhere in the valley that offers longer reds / blacks? We're good piste skiers, no off piste as we are too cool.
How bad are the queues to go up and down the gondola? looks like a serious bottleneck. Early starts and late finishes the way to go?
Any recommendations on where to drink and eat? Beers more than wine. Don't mind spending a few bob if the food is good.
Any advice from the Zillertal pros is much appreciated.

The best areas for longer reds and blacks in the valley are Hochzillertal, Hintertux and Zillertal arena imo, Hoch probably edges it in the back(furthest) valley. All easy to get to from where you are. The queues up Penken are generally fine, its a high capacity lift now, never been end of feb right enough.
Make sure you have food in the butchers right opposite the Penkenbahn, great value and beers available in there too.
The area above Mayrhofen I think offers the least captivating and the busiest skiing in the valley but you can go up that way and ski over to Eggalm etc to catch bus up to the Glacier. There are some nice runs on the way worth repeating imo.

Thanks Alasdair, much appreciated.
For skiing the Zillertal and Hochzillertal areas, would an early train or bus to Zell am Ziller be the best way?

For Zell am Ziller you can get a bus from the train station in Mayrhofen direct to the Rosenalmbahn which avoids getting the train then the separate ski bus to the Rosenalmbahn (which goes from the train station anyway). Either works but I like the direct bus.
For Hochzillertal/Kaltenbach you get the train from Mayrhofen to Kaltenbach then walk a few mins to the lift station. Follow the people. You can’t go wrong as the Braunegger supermarket entrance will be on your left as you walk past it on the way to the lift station.

Thanks, much appreciated. I was trying to figure things out looking at the timetables.

The cafe at the bottom of the Ahorn run also does great food and beer if you are there around lunch.
As for restaurants for the evening there are quite a few down the main street that are good and also the Perauer near the Ahornbahn.

As for pubs, Mo's, great if there is a band on, Scotland Yard always busy after 10 and if you end up at the bottom of the village, then Mike's Sports Bar.

+1 for Mo's when a band is on!!

The run from the top of the Ahorn is, quite possibly, my favourite run anywhere.

I've watched a few videos on youchube, looks excellent. Lots of the skiing looks great.
We'll arrive on the first train from Jenbach on the Saturday morning. Dump bags, collect skis, buy pass and probably best head up the Penkenbahn. The last day will likely have to be skiing in Mayrhofen to make the most of the time before getting the train back to Jenbach.
For Sunday and Monday, I think we'll go to Zillertal, maybe a day either side.
Thanks for all the advice so far.
Bit of an odd one, a touch Gnobhead rather than Snowhead, but does anyone know if there is anywhere in Mayrhofen to smoke a cigar? In recent years, I've found hotels that have let me drink and have a smoke in Ischgl, Solden, Fiss, Serfaus, Livigno and Selva.

The Berghof had a smoking room last time I was there but that was a few years ago so
worth double checking.
Buy your lift pass in Jenbach and that will also cover your train journey.

Great advice. Can you buy the lift pass at the station? We'll be on the 0610 boozehound express from Innsbruck HauptbahnhauptbahnHof.

Just ask at the ticket office if it's open at that time. My Daughter is doing this on Sunday.
