One issue seems to be a lack of suitable punishment if caught. The next day it looks like these idiots are able to do the same again unbothered. Not much of a deterrent to these misguided fools.

Look at the fools sticking themselves to M25, entering a museum and throwing paint at pictures etc. The police weren't doing much, seems catch and release is about it.

Only the ones who was caught repeatedly before. To few to make someone think twice, when you know you can get nicked a handful of times before being released with no action.
Yet, dare a motorist give one of them a slap or tap them with the car, they get the book thrown at them.

If you are charged with a minor offence, you are then released to go about your business (unless it is a serious charge in which case you are remanded in custody until your court appearance).
Thats how it works.
If they are daft enough to continue to do it all again, get caught and then charged - again and again - then they will end up in prison.
I am unsure what you think the police should be doing differently in this situation?

I had to smile at the way the ecoloons were dealt with when they stuck themselves to the floor in Germany at (I think it was a VW) premises. Turned off the heating and lighting and left them there. I don't suppose they even saw the irony with the energy saving measure.

Glueing yourself to the road is a public nuisance offence.
What you describe above as a "slap" is assault and the second one is even more serious if you drive a car at someone.

@Gored, where to begin with that. First of all (apart from the obvious idiocy of thinking you should be allowed to run someone over if they do something which is a minor nuisance), it’s ‘you don’t swerve’, not brake (note the spelling). Unless it is bigger than a muntjac deer, in which case you definitely do swerve unless it will cause a head on collision.

They do get to go to prisons, quite a few were also denied bail, which was a bit of a shock to them.
Also, I really do hope that if you tried to assault and run over protesters you will also get charged and put in prision.

@ster, TBF the highway code is not the law, so one can't be prosecuted directly for failing to follow it, only for any driving offence, e.g. dangerous/reckless/careless driving that may result from said breach.

These are all ones which are actually enshrined in the various Road Traffic Acts anyway, so while the use of those words does indeed mean that failing to follow is illegal, it's not their inclusion in the highway code that makes it so.

What’s the maximum sentence for deliberately breaking someone’s arm or hand? 
I’m aware this is a snowsports forum and I’m a snowsports enthusiast of many years. Call me a hypocrite, or put me in a stereotyped box, whatever floats your boat.
I’m also enthusiastic about Earth avoiding a collision course with Armageddon through over exploitation of the environment.
Whilst I don’t generally condone unlawful activity, I support peaceful protest.
There have been many examples in past history when beneficial social change occurred only through stretching protest to the limits. The ‘right to roam’ campaign, CND marches, various anti-war protests. These led to changes in bad laws and bad policies, in my opinion.
Like many issues, look beneath the tabloid headlines, think around it a bit to try to appreciate the complexities.

They should go &  & protest in countries that have not reduced emissions. While the UK - a relatively small country has reduced 50%+ the last 40 years, other countries like china, india & USA have increased, to the point the 3 of them produce 50% of all emissions. Dwarves not only what we produce, but makes our own cutbacks & detriment to heavy industry pointless.
Peeing in the wind. Id’ glady contribute to their cause if they needed help to pay for plane tickets & go protest in shanghai. Only a 1 way ticket though.

Want to target carbon emissions in countries with a ski industry? Germany and Poland account for 53 per cent of emissions from power stations in Europe, because of the brown coal they burn. RWE, the massive German energy concern, are currently knocking down their own wind farm to expand their brown-coal mine at Garzweiler. Meanwhile France has rather low-carbon nuclear as its main option.
