Needing to transfer some precious (!) sterling into Swiss and Euros (oh, I so wish it was 18 months ago) and thinking of getting better rates and cheaper fees than my bank. Have found these guys http://www.ozforex.com.au/ on the net - anyone used them? Reviews? Recommendations for alternatives?
Thanks

under a new name, the Nationwide will do you (if you open an account obviously) an interbank rate transfer for any amount by SWIFT with zero commission for £20. That's pretty hard to beat with the currency brokers unless you are transferring large amounts.

brian, thanks - but I think (IIRC) I was quoted interbank transfers for about £5 charge. Certainly a much better rate than my HBOS account. And I really don't want another UK bank account - we're trying to shed them not take them on...

under a new name, there are quite a few on-line forex brokers now, haven't used a conventional UK bank for money transfers in ages, if you shop around you can find no-cost transfers.

Never heard of ozforex.
I use moneycorp for our apartment transfers. Flat fee of £15 I think, regardless of amount transferred, so it's more than your £5, but I guess the value you get depends on what rate they give you on the transfers themselves. I have always got a rate more or less the trading rate on the FT or BBC websites off them, so I don't think they are taking massive commissions (as in I think it's none). It's always been cheaper to do this than use my bank.
You have to set up an account with them, but once you have, you get an Account Manager and they've always been good with us. I got them from three separate word of mouth recommendations. Money always there within two days, usually the next day.

under a new name, I have used ukforex (the uk arm of ozforex) a lot and they are very good and reliable. There is a charge of £7 for amounts under £3000, and they will not do amounts under £1000. Over £3K it is free.
The rates are excellent, ( depends on amount transfered but we have got 0.8% margin) daily commentary is quite interesting. PM me if you want me info.

Been keeping an eye on the exchanges 'cause I need to get some changed for the end of the month, went into Tesco's earlier and saw an exchange desk asked about £300 into euros and she said for £308 I'd get back 320 euros. About the best I've seen so far, internet or in person.
Thats £1=1.03euro.

The pound has gone up by 4.89% against the Euro in the last 3 days
Should you wait or buy now, who knows, not me.
Up to you.
But at this rate you MAY be better waiting just a few days.
Today's rate is 1.10459 Euro to the £
We (the compnay I work for in the summer) are waiting for a few months to see what happens

It's the interbank rate.
We (like most non-small TO's) tranch our currency. That is we buy it tranches (set amounts at a forward contracted rate)
Big boys will tranch millions a time (TUI will do it in billions) we forward contract our in units of £100,000
Not sure what the tourist rates are but you should be able to get around .5 below interbank if you look around
Interbank rate can be seen @
www.xe.com
The screen will refresh every 2 mins or so

I have used Custom House numerous times for transferring sterling to canadian dollars and vice versa. Have always found them extremely competitive and very easy to use. Not sure how their euro rates compare but they have a converter on their site.

I use ukforex (same group) for the french mortgage. Never had a problem. You go on-line and input how much you want to transfer. Once you press send about 1 minute later you get a call from someone confirming the details of the deal then you send them the cash via internet transfer. Does not seem to matter if it takes a few days for the cash to hit their account as you get the agreed forex rate from when you did the deal.
Usual set up process re proof of id etc.
