How ugly is Avoriaz in summer?
I’m thinking of booking a week there in August. I’ve been there in winter, but I know that everything can look a bit different in summer.
Is it really ugly?
For context: I’ve spent the last three summers in Tignes and Flaine, so I don’t expect something like Kitzbühel or Lech. But would you say Avoriaz is uglier than Flaine or Le Lac?
Our three Week tour was Tignes/Flaine/SFL and we are thinking of changin Flaine with Avoriaz.

@turms2, I’ve spent time in Avoriaz in summer, although not stayed there. It didn’t stand out as ‘ugly ‘, rather as functional, and if you’re attuned to the likes of Tignes or Flaine I don’t think you’d notice much difference. Does it offer you a good base for your plans, and good access?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Montan, thans for the reply.
The plan ist heading for the first week in Tignes, then from small St. Bernard Pass to Flaine (or Avoriaz) for 2nd Week and then to SFL for the 3d week before we go back to Germany.
We have done it three summers already, the kids love it, but i notice the last summer in Flaine it was a little boring for the kids (they done almost everyting many times)
Tignes has to be for my son (because of the slidings to the lake) and SFL is a must for my daughter (do not ask why), so i thought trying something different instead of Flaine.
Access either Flaine or Avoriaz is the same (we are driving till there so...).
The main Plan (als in in Flaine) is what you mention as Functional : sit in Flaine Forum or in Avoriaz Festival "Street", drink a panache and let the kids do what ever they want round there . Thats why i am thinking about Avoriaz .

Wouldn't say it was ugly. If anything it just merges into the background, Brown/black wood against brown/black rock.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@turms2, personally I don’t see resort in the mountains as ugly. I tend to look up at the beauty rather than down at the town. I don’t even mind the malgovert power station. The resorts are just somewhere to stay. I do, however, find the valley towns too hot during the summer and much prefer staying up the hill.
I’ve also admired the architecture of avoriaz.
Some suggestions to spice up the holiday:
If son likes sliding into the lake, book a rafting or Kyak trip down the Isère from bourg st Maurice
Do some via ferrata.
I fancy going over to Switzerland this summer just to sample some alpine coasters.

@johnE, ok, i have to admit, although i love it, that Flaine is ugly. Been there 5-6 times, winter and summer, i had really nice time, but its ugly. And now with the new buildings is uglier
Otherwise yes...every resort is better than in the city

I’ve been told by multiple locals the original designers chose the wood cladding very carefully so this was the effect!
I rather like Avoriaz personally, it’s not as ugly as some other purpose built places.

We visited Avoriaz in the summer, didn't notice anything ugly. The golf was really fun, although no matter how well you hit it, you will never have a flat lie. Also, the beginners slopes were filled with goats and alpacas and tennis courts. I really loved the mountains in the summer, but my wife is more of a beach person, so she tolerated it (especially the rainy day).

I was also a beach person (as a Greek, I had to be), but after some skin “problems” and the death of my father from skin cancer (though he was already 90 years old), I completely changed my mindset about summer holidays.
I love the mountains, but 20 years ago, I couldn’t have imagined spending my summer holidays there… now it’s the only option
Unfortunately, as a kid in the ’80s, we didn’t pay much attention to sun protection, etc… and now the bill has come.
Thank got the kids and my wife liked it also...furthermore is cheaper for us driving till Avoriaz or Tignes, instead of flying in the school Holidays somewhere with beach.

Avoriaz is not uglier than Tignes or Flaine. Although in the summer, I would much rather stay down in Morzine and go up to Avoriaz for the day. Much more going on in Morzine.

Not been for a few years but when I did it was a bit harsh compared to being there with snow....but main issue is it feels like a ghost town - by comparison with Morzine. Might have improved in that respect I guess.
