 Poster: A snowHead

A large group of us are going to this resort in early March for a few days. We are trying to decide if we need to hire cars or if we can get a taxi transfer and rely on the ski buses so we can access Les Portes du Soleil ski area.
Can anyone give me some advice please - how frequent are the buses, is it easy to get around, get to the supermarket etc? Any other information would be appreciated.

@CreteCoteSki, You can get around on the ski buses but I think that to get to the Intermarché supermarket you need a cab or a change of ski bus.
The Super Chatel ski area is easily accessed from the Panthiaz lift in La Chapelle D’Abondance. Linga, Pres La Joux are a bit more of a trek involving multiple lifts.

I stayed about 100m from the Panthiaz bubble which gives you direct access to Torgon, Super Chatel and the rest of the PDS, so did that 50% of the time. On the other days, I got a bus (from the Panthiaz bubble) into Chatel village and started my day there.
For Pres la joux, you'll need to change buses in Chatel.
The only reason I got the bus on those days was so that I could get to other areas of the PDS quicker.
If you're not staying within walking distance (in ski boots) of Panthiaz, you'll need a lift of some kind to get there. The same bus will get you into Chatel village.

@CreteCoteSki, I will just add, that to access Super Chatel and beyond from CdA, a majority of lifts on the Torgon side are drag lifts. While these are not too bad going towards Chatel, coming back to CdA from Torgon involves a couple that aren't pleasant to the extent my children wont do that route. The best skiing and PdS access are from Pres La Joux and personally I would hire a car.

Ah, the combo of Djeu des Tetes and Conche 2000. Only made the mistake of taking them the once!
On the flip side if you like easy access off piste/side piste the Torgon area is one of the best hunting grounds days after the last snowfall. Everyone avoids it because of the drag lifts meaning it doesn't get tracked out by 10am.

@Mjit, It's a favourite area for me when I'm taking boarders out in good snow but poor light; if they can't manage a few drag lifts they don't deserve the pow!

Have they got rid of the 2 man chairlift at the top of the Panthiaz. Can't see it on the piste map anymore.
I remember a few years back doing laps of the 2 man chair and braitaz all day in deep powder and seeing about 10 people all day.

Drags are no problem at all for decent snowboarders. I went up one once, behind a boarder, and thought I'd keep a careful eye on him. He took out his phone and was playing with it all the way up so I relaxed.

@mikeycharlton, You're right - it's disappeared off the map. It was shut for a lot of last season so maybe it's got a problem, although it was still there in October.

Not the hugest loss though the red run from it was just the right angle to see if your technique was coming on as it should. Lynx serves same purpose and is much longer.
