When you get your ticket from the airport, go to the desk, and they will print out a ticket, and a timetable of which trains to catch, and from which platform

You need to get on a regional train not the EC trains which go onto Italy. The trains are blue & white and the company that runs them is "BRB". From memory you sometimes have to change at Rosenheim but generally the train goes to Kufstein. The trains depart from Hauptbahnhof and on occasion you might be better off going there from the airport. It is generally quicker to go via the Ostbahnhof but there have been a large number of disruptions in recent times, especially at weekends, which means no sbahns through the central section, replacement buses etc (we are getting grumpy about all this). Do check beforehand just in case the S8 is not running or disrupted.
The platform at Kufstein is a fair walk if you are changing onto another train.

Get on the ugly looking train.
Not the nice ICE ones in white!
decent foodcourt in Ostbanhof & outside on the right corner is a Lidl if you want something cheap for the onward journey.
Also Masks are mandatory in Bavaria & on public transport - They do not need to be FFP2 though.

Also, there is pretty much nothing at Kufstein station. If you need food and drinks, get them in Munich.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

lol last splitter train I went on in Germany had half a train in one colour very much operated by Luxembourg railways and the other half in a very different colour operated by a German operator going to Saarbrucken. Even then at Trier (or wherever) there were people doing the dash between trains.
Splitter/Joiner train round here confused me the first time when I got on at the front of a train knowing I'd want to be near the front for optimal platform positioning at the destination only to step off the train closer to the rear of a 3x longer train that I'd got on. You don't even feel when they couple.

Ah lads ye are starting to confuse me now, usually have our young adult kids with us and they use google maps and we just follow them, doing it on our for New Year, don’t want to do car hire

You know it makes sense.

@2waterford, you’ll be fine, just pay attention to the signage on/in the train. It can be useful to know the final destination, if it’s not Kufstein. If you’re confused, ask someone, but if you understand the concept of splitters, you are less likely to be caught out.

Thanks Scarlett, Kufstein is our final destination

@2waterford, no need for confusion, it is very straight forward. You can buy a Bayern ticket from one of the apps mentioned above or from the ticket machines at the airport or if you want to queue from the ticket desk. For four adults a Bayern ticket costs €50, you can buy it using a credit card for today or future days using the app, no problem to do so whilst waiting for your plane to depart. Go down the escalator and catch an S8 S Bahn, they go every 20 minutes, it takes around 35 minutes to Ostbahnhof. The S1 gets there too but goes the long way round so is slow. There are a few regional trains (clearly marked) that dont go into Munich.
At the Ostbahnhof there are a fair number of food shops etc (kebabs, bratwurst etc), bakers, there is a 24 hour 365 day supermarket as part of the station building (go up the escalator, out the door, turn left past Burger King). The regional trains to Kufstein should run once an hour they are blue & white obvious regional trains, dont worry about ICE trains (dont think there are any currently, at most one a day), the EC trains to Italy are obvious too. Maybe you will have to wait a while depending on when you get to the Ostbahnhof, there is (or at least used to be) a pub inside by the entrance if you need to sit and wait. There are a couple of departure boards showing platforms etc in the open area near the kebab stand, staffed info desk here too. The apps have live departure details too.
Unless you are traveling early morning or late night no need to change (no "splitter" trains either). As noted above not much at Kufstein beyond a fair walk from the "Bavarian" platforms to the rest.
As will all train systems there is a small possibility of things going wrong, cow on the line or whatever, though generally it works without too many issues

The Euro City trains which should be avoided will mostly have a final destination of Verona, but a few will have the final destination as Bologna or Venice
