Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Snow after rain

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
What happens to the new snow that has fallen after the rain? Will this definitely become humid/damp snow? or will it guard any soft light qualities? Especially in the case of there being considerable amounts 20-40cm

Trying to work out where and what to do this weekend, not simple.

No, it will not 'definitely' become anything, it totally depends on temperatures and further precipitation. And how much snow was down in the first place. If the rain fell on existing snow, and it's now freezing, it may help the new stuff to bind into it, so it's often a good thing for snowpack development through the season. For short-term effects you really need to be there and look at it.

So let us know what you find wink

There will most likely be a layer of wet snow with powder on top but it depends on the temperature / humidity when the snow falls and what the conditions were before it rained.

You generally end up with a weak layer of snow, or it can become very hard and frozen layer. As others have mentioned, it depends on the conditions when the rain fell and then after the rain turns to snow. However, the new snow on top will be prone to slide on steeper slopes, especially if there's a substantial amount that accumulates (30+cm).

You get snow on top of ice.

Followed by lots of folks getting killed in avalanches.
