@Snowtrain, im sure it will be fine - quite usual not to have snow there yet. Nearest snowsure is probably Flaine or Avoriaz.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Won't you be able to get the lift up and over into the Flaine bowl - will probably be some decent prospects up there by then? Or an hour drive to Avoriaz? It was always unlikely there'd be much snow down in Samoens village itself in mid-December.

Ah thanks both! Very excited to get out on my new skis.
I thought Samoens town was quite pretty when last there skiing in the rain

Yes it is - prettier than most places around! And it'll be nice and quiet.

Worthwhile checking Morillon and Les Carroz respectively to assess snow levels if it's really sparse. Obviously close to Samöens but slightly more enclosed in tree line that can give a difference that's helpful. They all have individual snow making available if temps are low enough to spray but the alternative may hold it better from being slightly more sheltered.
Nearby, Praz De Lys, also worth checking for level/opening etc as again it has different aspect and may give variation in conditions. Very easy visit with parking in village next to snow/piste along with very good restaurants right there to use and relax.
Les Gets is only 30min by road too, again with shift in aspect to give snow possibilities.
Non ski activities, driving to the end of valley (past sixt village) and walk out into a spectacular and beautiful "Fer a Cheval" is well worth considering.
Road to Morzine Col d Joux Plan from Samöens takes you up the side of valley for spectacular views (termination in winter is a carpark there as road closed for ski use) along with usually a big toboggan area to play on. This is located at very far edge of PdS ski area (though not accessible) as you can see the Les Gets chairlift up above you when there, also views across to Mont Blanc.
Samöens very pretty and usually has a decent sized ice rink set up in winter at edge of village.

Just to clarifiy you can’t ski back to Samoens and it’s altitude is about 700m so one would not necessarily expect snow in the village. The samoens ski area starts at 1600m and is north facing. Morillon Les Esserts and Les carroz ski areas are lower…around 1100m.
At the moment it looks green at the foot of the slopes in Les carroz and morillon but snow is forecast this week and as mentioned above the samoens ski area is higher. Therefore it is too soon to worry about lack of snow for 17th December.
If the snow were poor at the time of your stay Flaine would be the nearest higher place to drive to but it is easier to get there on skis.

You can get quickly up to Samoens 1600 via the Grand Massif Express, from that (snow-cannon covered) plateau there are chairlifts going further up to 2120m, the North-facing blue and red runs back to 1600m area are covered by snow cannons for the lower 2 thirds.
