I know this is a bit premature with the full list of countries where travel is to be allowed into England about to be published. The BBC has been good at publishing details about travel to other countries but seems to have forgotten about Austria. We are planning to go to the Dolomites later this summer and one potential route is to drive through Austria. The last I read was that they were demanding `14 days quarentine on arrival or take a fairly expensive 3 hour test. Does this still apply?

The infection rate is level in UK. After tomorrow it's only going in one direction so unless Austria relaxes it's current rules I reckon you'll have to avoid it.

The position today is that if you’re transiting through Austria without a stopover, you do not need a medical certificate if you can prove you are transiting.

@NickyJ, Thats OK for returning to England. I hope and expect that @Austrian Seagull, is correct and I can somehow just proove that I am transitting their country. @Markymark29, I'll not be going through the Netherlands, but I am contemplating the drive through France, Switzerland and hence to Italy.

Whatever the UK (or English ) government might decide there is no guarantee that there will not be a quarantine requirement in the countries you might be visiting. Austria currently has such a quarantine requirement for people who have been in the UK in the past 14 days. Transiting directly from Germany to Italy (with no stops in services etc) has been allowed for some time. I would be a little cautious about driving through Austria with a UK registered car, although there are no longer controls at the border that does not mean the Austrian police will not be keeping a very close eye on vehicles entering the country. Whilst for instance a car with Munich plates is very unlikely to get stopped that might not be the case for one with Gütersloh, UK or Swedish ones (all places with a quarantine or negative test requirement in Austria currently). Personally I would check with the Austrian embassy before making firm plans, at one point you needed to have a signed declaration that you were transiting and would not stop.
Official Austrian info here, it says quarantine or test for UK, Sweden, Portugal & Gütersloh though transit should be OK (though it doesnt say how that is regulated)

Looks like we’re cancelling, not paying £500 for 2x tests plus a wasted hull-Rotterdam ferry because travel through Holland requires a 14 day quarantine......bah, useless Boris and his lousy CV management.

@munich_irish, have booked a Eurotunnel crossing just now so will cross via Calais (just hope we can get a credit for the Hull/ Rotterdam P&O crossing and we’ll use in winter otherwise that’s a big chunk of cash down the drain) so we’ll likely head to Bavaria, French Alps, Provence or Andorra if Austria entry thing remains unchanged. The prospect of driving in Austria and getting dodgy looks from every passing vehicle on the basis of our UK plates, and in hotels doesn’t excite me too much even if we had a test......only way in for us realistically to go to Austria is if Kurz relaxes the entry rules, here’s hoping, can’t see it though. Thanks for your help, the Netherlands situation is unclear so thought I’d at least get a crossing booked....not cheap because Eurotunnel have hiked their prices as expected but at least we might get away.

@holidayloverxx, Just out of interest what’s the test called, just a CV-19 test? Stupid question I know but thought i might call around a couple of places in Leeds and see if anything local at sensible money that gives a 24hr result and certificate. Want to check I’m asking for the right test.

@skitow, thanks, all our ski gear is dumped in a friends garage, we left it there when we had to evacuate 13th March, 2 ski bags and 2 boot bags, need to get it back somehow.
I just checked regards test - there’s a clinic in Leeds at £150 but tests take 72 hours which is no good because we would be entering Austria midday on Wednesday 26th August so a Monday test would be no use anyway. Equally if we had the test on the Friday prior it’d be over 4 days. They don’t work weekends. Equally if we leave if so close we’d be liable for full cancellation costs for our booked hotels so it’s not an option that’d be stupid, we may as well hold off until 2 weeks prior and see if Kurz changes anything and book an Airb&b somewhere else if not. Perhaps drive to border and pay for a taxi to bring out our stuff but that won’t be cheap.

@Markymark29, If it is the end of August the situation is almost certainly going to be different than today, who knows if better or worse. I might be worrying unnecessarily over the UK plate thing, though I do know someone (Bavarian) who got escorted out of Austria a few weeks back by the police after getting stopped on his way to his holiday home. If all you want to do is collect some kit them why not hire a car in say Lindau, drive to the Arlberg and drive straight back. The chances of getting stopped in a car with a German plate is very small and even if you are you can say you are heading out of the country immediately.
I would have thought there would be no issue getting accommodation last minute at the end of August, you should be able to book pretty much the day before. Though I know some people worry about not having somewhere to sleep, you can always take a tent as a backup .

The format of the results is a big issue and timeliness. I haven’t found anywhere that works yet. Going to start calling Harley Street based clinics but I suspect the cost makes it challenging.

@munich_irish, ha yes could hire a car but the idea is to go in and stay there for 10 days hiking. Be just my luck to have an issue there with the hire car and get arrested for being an illegal of something, the Austrian polizei aren’t to be messed with ime. Worst case scenario I’ll just have to leave our kit there until next season! Like you say things may change if not we’ll probably opt to go further west into the Alps.
Thought occurred to me whether we can drive through Austria to say SüdTirol For hiking/ biking (I much prefer German speaking to French, also the food and people) and pick up our gear on route but I don’t know if that’s legal.

Cheapest so far I have found near me is GBP199. For a family of 4 that is steep.
Plus BA just cancelled my flights (again) for end of August.
I suppose we could risk it and take the test at the airport but the downside is too problematic if you are found to be positive.

The link to the form doesnt work this one should.
It is possible to get tested once you arrive in Austria and then await the result, assuming it is negative you can stop self isolating. Not really practical for a short holiday visit though.
