Fellow Snowheads can you do me a small favour and take a minute or two to look over an app that I’ve built? I’d very much appreciate all comments and criticism from the demographic that it’s designed for – i.e. you lot!
I came up with the idea for it during the defunct 2021 season after speaking to some resort-based business owners, acquaintances and friends who were having a miserable time of it.
Over the years there have been lots of people that have gone the extra mile for me to make my ski holidays better and who have never charged me a penny for doing it. I’m sure some of the same things will have happened to you: Fitters endlessly tweaking boot fit, hotels cooking something different for my fussy kids, lifties helping me get them on and off lifts, teachers giving me extra time and advice on lessons etc., restaurants giving me another burger when I dropped mine straight after buying it etc.
Anyway, it all adds up, and this is my speculative attempt to give something back. Maybe it will pay for itself, maybe it won’t, but I thought I’d try it anyway.
I have been working on the app in my spare time since 2021, and now the first version is complete.
The app has simple goals:
1. Give all businesses in a ski resort – regardless of their size or marketing budget – an equal chance to gain (and retain) your custom.
2. Save you money on your holiday essentials.
3. Add a dose of ease and convenience to the job of obtaining those essentials.
4. Cover every ski resort in the world (that’s a longer term goal!!!)
5. Make it free for every kind of user.
For example, with just a few taps, you can contact every ski hire shop in a resort, let them know when it is that you are coming to the resort, and ask for a deal on your ski hire.
The shop should be able to offer you a discount because they’ve foregone their usual costs of obtaining a new client (e.g. commission to tour operators, marketing and advertising costs etc.) By pre-booking and taking payment in advance the shop can also allocate its time and resources better.
The app is available for Apple and Android phone users.
Apple users can download it from the App store using this link:
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/skicard/id1586335374?itsct=apps_box_link&itscg=30200
And Android users can download it from the Play store using this link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skicard
Please feel free to criticise and/or praise the app as you see fit. I’m wide open to suggestions as to how it could be improved. I’ve put a lot of work in and I’m hoping that everyone will like it, but I accept that it’s rare to get things right on the first attempt, so fire away!

Thanks for taking the time to look and reply.
I was wondering if the verification should be later (i.e. when a user wants to send a message to retailers) rather than when someone first installs the app, as the potential for them getting irritated and deleting the app if they can't see the email at that point is quite high I'd imagine. Any thoughts welcome!

For those of you that are sending deal requests to retailers for your upcoming trips, the messages are still coming to me, sorry, because we're in test mode. I will make the changes when I finish work tonight so that messages go to the actual people they are supposed to go to.

1. put SOMETHING in news - even if its just "Hello - this is a new app, this is what we are trying to do etc, we would love your feedback..."
2. I'm interested in what you're sending out to your potential stores by way of information about me - are these deals specific to me or to all SkiCard holders? Does this deals come back to be via SkiCard or are you passing my email etc onto the shops etc? Are we being signed up to their mailing lists as part of this?

@greengriff, nice idea
Some ramblings after a quick perusal
The app icon on my iphone looks very (too) subtle in terms of contrast, looks washed out and doesn’t stand out.
Some queries:
Why does Country of residence matter/get used for (language already established in earlier question)?
How long before I would expect some replies to a query?
Do you give the retailers my email? Will I get spammed by them thereafter?
The Calendar is a pain on the Get Offers, took me a while to figure out for dates that ran over a year boundary that I had to change the ending year first, before it would let me put in the ending month and day.
A few resorts I know I looked at
Les Contamines – has a lot of Megeve outlets, whilst fine for some services may not be ok for others.
Suggest you have strictly local ones listed first, then perhaps a secondary list/option to get to another list for those further afield?
Crans-Montana
• You have “Angels’ Sport ski shop” listed with an address in Mumbai?
• Also have Nax the region listed as a Ski shop
Check and check again the listings, nothing makes me stop using a listing site quicker than where the listings are wrong/useless.
Might be nice to have the map option which shows all the restaurants/rentals etc. at once rather than one at a time?
Restaurants
Might be more use with a bit of a blurb on the listing screen rather than having to click into them one by one , what type of food (having it on the second screen you need to click into doesn’t add much)
Maybe allow to search/group by food type/price/area of resort (in town/on slope at least?)
You list the phone numbers but not the email. However I guess you email them with the details input in the “Get Offers” section?
The Get Offers covers the entire offering you have in resort rather than going to the one outlet you are on when you click it?
There is an option to get “notifications” from the resort, what are these.
Nothing in News section, either have something (and keep it up to date) or don’t bother with this section. Pet peeve are websites where their latest news is 2 years old!
Are you going to bother with reviews or is this just a paid listing site?

Richard, thanks for the feedback. When you contact a business they receive your name and email address so they can contact you back. At that point the app has done its job and bows out. Deals are personal - basically we just open a dialogue between you and the business.
I will add something in explaining this process more clearly.

@greengriff, ok, then it might be useful to start incorporating some more specific information about your vendors - simple stuff, what style food they serve, a direct link to menus for restaurants, price point (€, €€, €€€) or for the ski shops, do they specialise in anything particular, Say, snowboards or back-country gear

Thank you so much for spending so much time both looking at the app and writing this response. It's very helpful, thanks.
I did the icon in black and white at first, but thought the silver looked more sophisticated. However as you say in the little icon it's a bit indistinct.
Country of residence - it is an attempt by me to gather information: i.e. if the app takes off I can see where it is people are downloading it, whereas if I just asked language they could speak English but live in any number of places in the world.
You won't get any replies to the emails you sent thus far because they are still coming to me. I intended to start them going to the real retailers once testing was over, but if people are going to actually try and use the app I'd better do it sooner! When they are actually going to the real retailers, response time is going to depend on them, and - I guess - will be one of the factors for a user choosing who to spend their money with.
When you send an email the retailer gets the name you entered in the app and the email address, so they can respond. Regarding spam, that's an interesting question. I wonder if I should add in something (e.g. an optional tick box) telling retailers they are only allowed to reply in the context of a user's request?
The calendar is native to whatever system you are using unfortunately. I'm not smart enough to design my own from scratch.
Regarding the listings, I used employees at my work to gather some of them and these people have no ski knowledge. So that might result in errors. Although to be fair, I only know a few resorts perfectly, so I might not have done any better. I put a 'report' button on each listing to help crowdsource info. Do you think it's offputting?
The mapping again makes use of the native services, so I'm a little limited, but I bet I can rig something up. I'll add it to the list, thank you.
Yeah, I considered putting more on the results screen, but thought it would make for a very, very long page in some instances. Do you think it would be better?
Regarding searching by food type etc. that's probably too granular for version 1. I've got more features in mind, but I will add it to the dev list. I would need come up with a way to integrate it without adding too much complexity to the user experience.
Yes, we email all retailers through the 'get offers'. Do you think the option to open an email to an individual retailer would be useful?
As you say 'get offers' mass contacts retailers by type.
'Notifications' will be news from the resort. If you have the resort favourited, then you will get a push notification when the resort posts something. This could be anything from a change in the avalanche warning level to an offer they've got on for visting the following season, it's non-specific.
The news section will be populated by the tourist offices once I've set them up. I though that was the best way. I guess I might have to write a few articles at first to make it look used.
I'm not sure what you meant by bothering with reviews/paid listing site?

I tried it in Italian and on some pages the text was still in English (e.g. country selection list, text on the resort page). I'm not at a high level of Italian but it looks like it needs a native speaker to cast their eye over it e.g. language selection is normally "Italiano" and it's "Italiana".
The date selection in the offers seems a bit clunky, it allowed me to choose a date in the past and then defaulted to today, the departure date is always going to be after the arrival date so it would be useful to default the from to the arrival, when trying to change the departure date it defaulted to today. It would be useful if it remembered your dates
The food and drink list had the local tourist board listed, maybe have a another section for that kind of info ? (you could also do taxi, bus companies etc...)
It would be useful to have a notes option when sending requests, e.g. this type of ski needed etc to save toing and froing

I think some further basic info (or even filtering) on the results screen would be better, as to list size you could improve the use of real estate on it so it doesnt appear too big.

I mean will you take feedback/ratings on retailers from your users to benefit/inform other users, such as "this retailer doesnt reply", "this one provides irrelevant offers to my dates", "this retailer was great" , 1-5 stars etc.
But overall the more I think about it , I would like immediate relevant offers to be found for me rather than waiting/hoping some retailer gets in touch, perhaps none will then I think the app doesnt work, is of no use (but thats because of the retailer not your app). So better to get some offers from retailers that you can display immediately once the user selects resort and service of interest, like here's a voucher for 5-10% off at this restaurant for this period/meal, then the retailer can also contact with other offers later.

Thanks. May I ask what OS you are using (i.e. Apple or Android)? The calendar makes use of the native OS calendar but should definitely set the departure date by default to the arrival date you already entered, so that you don't have to scroll through months of dates to get to it if your holiday is in January and you are using the app in August.
I did the language part myself, so it will definitely need help!!!

This strikes me as a massive project. Dozens of countries, each with dozens of resorts, each with hundreds of outlets, in multiple languages! That is going to need a very large database, and will need almost continual updating. I would initially limit the scope to something that will be manageable.
I think a map or some form of location service and/or restriction is essential. Particularly in mid-large resorts. Even if a hire shop is 30% cheaper than all the rest, or a restaurant offers a cracking good deal, I am probably not going to use them if they are a mile away from my accommodation. That also means I may get overwhelmed with useless quotes. And service providers won't want to waste their time giving quotes to people at the opposite end of the resort, so they may want to know where I am as well.
If it is going to remain free to users, presumably at some point you will need to cover your costs by charging the businesses? So they won't completely avoid the cost of client acquisition, and will have to choose whether your app is better than alternatives.

Yes, it is quite big. On the limit of what I can do time-wise at the moment.
Interesting point about location. I guess people will have different tolerances for saving money vs distance they are prepared to walk, but I will definitely ponder a way to do as you suggest.
It will always remain free to skiers and resort shops. Income wise my goal was - if the app got big enough - to place ads in the app. If it doesn't then I won't. It shouldn't cost much to run.

OK, to reply:
I'll work the 'no marketing emails' option in ASAP'.
The report button is on every individual listing - nestled on the right hand side of the image. One of the issues it seems is that google itself is not quite up to date. I have initially manually picked up each listing from a google search (e.g. 'Ski lessons Arc 1600') and if a business is now defunct, but still appearing in google search results, I will have picked it up. Hence my desire to crowdsource better info. However if you can think of a better way I'd definitely love to hear it!
Filtering the results might be reasonably easy to implement, but I can only think of it being useful in the 'eat and drink' section? I.e. no need for filtering in the 'ski lessons' section. But what kind of filtering did you have in mind? By cuisine? I.e. French, Indian etc? Or something else?
The 'news' section will just be an aggregation. Resorts will have an individual news feed, so that users will be able to just look at the resorts they are personally interested in. I thought it was easy just to pool them all as well into a 'news' section, but you're making me wonder if it's pointless now. Nobody has to click on it though.
I had not thought of gathering user feedback on the retailers. That kind of takes the app away from my goal for it.
Yep, great idea about gathering some 'preordained' offers, thank you. Something to go on the list. I've got a bit of work to do

I've got a bit of work to do |
Give the user the choice to say whether they want the retailer to have on-going contact other than the reply to the specific query but I reckon the no marketing/spam setting should be the default.
Sorry still cant see the report button (perhaps doesnt display on all phones?). You can't rely on users tell you whats wrong, but as for you checking I can only suggest cross checking as best you can, perhaps ensuring listing has a live website somehow, checking against a listing on the tourist office website or some other method.
Filtering for all things
- distance from centre
then restaurants
- cuisine
- price level
- in resort/on slope
- vegetarian
(see things like tripadvisor for ideas on this!)
ski lessons, do they do
- privates
- groups
- ski
- snowboard
- children
ski shops, do they have
- touring skis
- snowboards
- rental/shops
- boots fitting only
Resort news feed could useful, but aggregated of all resorts in one screen not useful. If its not useful, then get rid otherwise you need to maintain it, it takes up valuable room on the front screen even jsut the button to take you there.
User feedback - if its not your vision then don't go there. You'll get all sorts of suggestions from everyone (as you've seen already), if its not how you see it or want to go then don't. Its your app after all!
GOOD LUCK!

NP, good to see enterprise in action.
Let us know when you get it up and running and all connected. We're supposed to have a trip in late Oct so might give it a run out.

Impressed wow! vwd @greengriff
Engagement is the big thing I feel - how does it become the go to app in resort.
What are the plans?

Thank goodness for that!
Yes, the 'real' work begins now I guess. I can reach resort businesses and tourist offices a lot easier than I can reach skiers, so I was going to start there. My first goal was getting tourist offices to create accounts so they can put their news and events into the app. I've created a back end system where they can log in, post a few words of news, and paste links to their own websites.
As for reaching skiers, maybe I'll have to try and do some stunt/viral marketing or something to get some publicity, since I have roughly zero advertising budget. There are groups like this, and FB Ski Club and so on, which will reach a few people, but just a drop in the ocean compared to the number of skiers out there.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful to hear them. Maybe someone is willing to streak across the screen on Ski Sunday wearing an A board for me

I was going to ask whether I could scrape your site, but you've lost me already as, on android, it goes straight to sky sports super.

My site? It's an app from the app store/play store? Do you mean you searched on the play store and couldn't find it?
