Poster: A snowHead

I'm taking my parents (82 and 83) to our mountain home in France for the first time. As well as gentle walks up in the mountains, picnics and exploring the landscape, I was wondering of anyone had recommendations for nice historic places or gardens to visit- probably near Annecy. Talloires on Lake Annecy is a lovely village but will it be swarming with tourists? Is there a french equivalent of the National trust? Folks are mad keen gardeners and I was wondering if there is anything like a lovely garden to visit.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@Perty, It doesn't fit your brief, but my folks sound like yours. I took mine up to the little dam above Villaret du Nial above the Lac du Chevril (Tignes/Val) You can park at the dam and it's a level walk along the reservoir side, we found most of the high alpine flowers including gentiane and eidelweiss (look out for the rings of pebbles that other folks have used to highlight the rare ones). It got me lots of Brownie points!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Actually, I think that's wrong. The first road is to the "Port" and that's the one you want.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@pam w, The Chateau visit is excellent, and has an amazing golden tapestry from Louis XIV. Really interesting family have lived there uninterrupted for around 1000 years. Also Chateau de Montrottier - pretty much all school kids from Haute Savoie have a trip here at some point in their lives, and find it interesting.

Thanks all. Montreux is a bit too far, @WindOfChange, but it looks lovely. @pam w, I'll definitely look at your suggestion-thanks!

The medieval walled city of Conflans - which is above Alberville, but only about 1km from it, is a bit of an unknown treasure. It's always been very quiet on the 3 or 4 times we've visited in July.
It has a nice main square of cafes and bars and lovely mountain views from the city walls. It's very small but definitely worth a look. About 40 mins from Annecy.
You can drive right up and park just off the main square (behind it), or park lower down for more of an uphill walk up to the square.

@Perty, If either of your parents have a blue disabled parking badge it might come in handy? We always used my Aunt`s when she was with us. Then again are UK ones still valid in Europe post Brexit?

I've always found Conflans a bit strange - like an old film set. Has very little life about it.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Yep, very quiet as I mentioned - but (in my view) still full of character and worth a visit for the average UK punter.

Gardens botanical brings some location to consider https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=gardens&find_loc=Annecy%2C+Haute-Savoie which may help as they are often signed as such locally.
Also Duingt village on the west shore of lake Annecy is really peaceful but beautiful to stop and walk around. Often missed as insignificant but we always stop there and spend a little time if near or passing that way. Some food from boulangerie to sit out there on a sunny day and just take in the absolutely stunning views around the lake, never crowded either https://annecyexplorer.fr/duingt/ unassuming but such nice feeling being there.
Further away, maybe out of range, Bonneval sur Arc village is well worth the time if at all possible https://www.haute-maurienne-vanoise.com/summer/bonneval-sur-arc/ but an easy drive along the Maurienne valley (don't use autoroute) with many nice village along the way to pass through. Spectacular monestry there in sweet pine smelling forest, history of Hannibal's route over the alps there as well. The whole valley rolls out many interesting locations to make the journey interesting along with many good places for food etc too.
