Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Austria fun resort

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Ive skied Mayrhofen 6 or 7 times over the last 30+ years and it always used to be my favourite but I took my daughters aged 24 and 21 last March and the nights were a real disappointment compared to years gone by, strass hotel seems to have gone posh and exclusive and the nightclubs etc were shut. was that the end of covid and was everywhere a bit dead or has mayrhofen lost its spirit a bit?. Anyway looking to maybe try somewhere else for the family trip next season with good lively cheesy apres, and skiing suitable for week 1 to week 20 skiers....any recommendations?

@ollski2.0, well if you're after lively apres ski in Austria it seems like one snowHead called savaloy_joy had a good time a few years back in Solden (or Soldin as he called it Laughing ), but I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for if it's a family trip..... Isn't Saalbach the standard answer?

Saalbach Hinterglemm, St Anton or maybe Ischgl (though after the events of March 2020, "beer pong" and other drunken nonsense is supposedly frowned upon)

If good lively cheesy apres is a requirement, it's hard to see you you could do better than the Mooserwirt in St Anton, it's perfected the art of cheesy apres over the last 30+ years it's been open, DJ Gerhard is a legend in St Anton.

The only potential problem is for the week 1 skiers (presumably that means they have skied one week, not total beginners), but my first visit there was after 1 week skiing along with some other friends in the same situation and had a great time. Just be aware there are no really 'easy' slopes in St Anton, even the blue run 50 to town which passes the Moose and Krazy Kangaruh (a bit less cheesy apres), and the Heustadtl, Sennehutte and Griabli (all of which have live music on some days) can be a bit chopped up in the afternoon.

There's not as many lively places in town as there used to be now that the Piccadilly has been turned into a cafe, but the Murrmel bar is generally lively and has DJs and live Music (Gunar most nights). Theres a place on the high street that changes it's name every few years. I still know it as the Kandahar because it's hard to keep track of the name changes, I think it was the horny bull for a while and now the Q club ? I haven't been in there for years but I believe it has a DJ there every night. For something more laid back there is a singer/piano player called James who plays in the Underground bar, though it seems likely that the eccentric bar owner is finally retiring so it might not be there next season.

And if you still have any energy left after trying all those apres spots, the skiing is of course fantastic Happy

Ah, the infamous (and 100% made up by a newspaper to hype up a story that was otherwise "People catch Covid in ski resort in middle of a global Covid pandemic") beer pong in the Kitzloch, Ischgl.

I'd 100% recommend Ischgl for you and your daughters - especially if you like to hear non-English voices when you're on holiday (Brits. are a minority in Ischgl). If they were still children I'd probably avoid it but as young adults they should have a great time - though they may end up in a different apres ski bar to you (there are 14 I can think of off the top of my head that will be kicking off, each with a slightly different vibe/soundtrack). While you can ski back to town it's a red and not especially fun when it's busy, to the point we sometimes just gondola down anyway after an especially hard day/an especially large Germknedle mit Vanillecreme before calling it a day - so not advised for the 1 week skiers. Other than that once you've taken the gondola up there's a nice mix of good length blues and reds.

Of course I think your poor last Mayrhofen experience probably was just down to Covid.

St. Anton, if they are confident on red and crowded pistes.
Mooserwirt and Heustadtl before reaching the village plus Basecamp at the bottom are the fun and tasty perfect ending of a ski day.
There's s always a debate going on about the best Austrian ski resort, mountain and resort wise.
Most people vote for St. Anton or for Ischgl, you can't go wrong with either.
Choose one for this season, then the second one for next year.

As much as I like St Anton (I generally only ski in the Arlberg these days, everywhere else seems tame in comparison) and the Mooserwirt is possibly the best apres spot anywhere, it isnt right for everyone. For a family group including week 1 skiers Saalbach Hinterglemm (amongst plenty of other places) is probably a better choice.

Cheers all, I want to go to St Anton but my eldest daughter is bringing her boyfriend and he will be a 1 hour snow dome lesson skier which made me think its not the best place to start. The girls have done a few years but only one year since they were little so they were pretty much back to beginners last year maybe just getting stem turns on blues at the end of the week. Also accommodation in St Anton is not exactly a bargain from a mayrhofen comparison

[In that case @munich_irish recommended the right spot, Saalbach.
Brixen in SkiWelt had awesome apres ski down in the valley right by the gondola and should be cheaper.

What about Kitz ?
That used to be THE place.
Great varied skiing.
All shades of Apres form
Londoner till about 1pm
Nightclubs or even casino
Round the night off with a curry flavoured hot dog from the van by the arch.

Or has that all gone?

+1 for Saalbach (but I would say that, as I live there). But not hard to find slopeside accommodation, and there is a choice of pistes to bring you right down into the village.
Also loads of skiing for all standards. And the après-ski starts up the mountain and continues in a variety of excellent bars and huts on the way down: the Bergeralm, the Maisalm, the Hinterhag Alm, Bauer’s Schialm, Burgi’s Bar, Spitzbub, and the Soul House.

You would be terribly disappointed if you went to Brixental for good apres. There's also a good chance the red to the bottom wouldn't even be open.

well...then probably Saalbach ist the best option.
I dont think tha St. Anton or even Ischgl are the place for someone with 1 hour lesson
Otherwise if you want to get rid of the boyfriend you could try Kitzbühel or Mayrhofen...
there are some slopes which are appropriate for novice boyfriends...e.g. Harakiri, Streif etc

what's the apre like in Söll I've got pals that have been there and said it was good all round for them. They had some complete beginners and some 1 week a year skiers

Söll is decent enough but maybe not what it was 15 years ago. There’s a few places at the bottom of the hill then the village is dominated by 2 pubs - The Mill and S’austria which both put on good live bands. It tends to be a home and get changed set up rather than stay outside in your ski gear and a largely British / Irish crowd in the village. You’re also not likely to hear Sweet Caroline or Johnny Depp.

@drporat, I didn't mean to come across so badly but that's pretty much the only bar in Brixental so I don't think it qualifies as a fun resort. It's definitely one of the quieter ones on the SkiWelt. The Reitlwirt restaurant is really good though and your video looks like a good time was being had snowHead

Saalbach Hinterglemm all day long. St Anton has probably become a victim of its own success with regards apres and limited if you want cheesy apres. Ischgl is a good choice too but for me S-H has everything on your list, especially the range of abilities for the skiing

Another vote for Saalbach, it has everything and is loads of fun. Hearing the home run into Brixen mentioned above has given me the shivers - I'd avoid with a first time skiier.

Generally speaking, beginners can and should download at the end of day especially on Austrian red pistes.
And if there is a warm, happy, cozy and bass throbbing place like the one we found in Brixen, to us it was a perfect place with a big parking lot nearby.

-1 for Saalbach, I will be back again in January for the 18th time to see if anything changes, but not sure this is the fun place. Each morning friends tell me what a fun day it was yesterday on the slopes and then in all the apres bars up the mountain and at the various in the village, eaten very well in the many restaurants and even been in some of the clubs later, but I don’t remember it being fun! From a skiing perspective my beginner nervous skiing wife found it a perfect resort for the few times she has been.
