Learn to darn, I guess, with a very fine wool or wool blend thread.
And/or pay less for them – I have loads of Smartwool and Icebreaker socks, but my spend limit is about £12/pair (SportPursuit usually). Though I don't tend to wear them out. I was put off Stance by their largely polyester composition, although that should make them more durable.

@pam w, I have one of those in my sewing cupboard! Mine is red with white spots on it. I regularly have to sew up- I e think I can darn - the backs of my socks where they turn in my Muck Boots.

I like the smartwool zero cushion ones and tend to buy them at 50% off in the end of season sale from smartwool themsleves. Worn one particular pair about 20+ times (with washes in between!) and whilst I can tell it's not new it's still fine. This is for typical downhill and no ski touring. Paid about €20 a pair in early March for them.

Appreciate that only reduces the price of your issue rather than resolves the holes themselves though!

Bob - sounds obvious but handcrafting your toenails so they are blunt - scissors plus file - is essential for long life sockage. Ball of foot is an odd one - aggressive dry skin? If so, pumice stone. If insole is causing the problem - some heat formed soles can have an abrasive surface - treatment can be sand with 120 grit paper and treat with silicon wax.

Wool ski socks need a certain amount of synthetic content to be durable .
The scandi,s seem to use around 20%.
Smartwool has probably varied over the years Im sure they originally had 100% many years ago ....now synthetic content probably varies .
My rules for good smartwool ski/snowboard socks when doing months in resort were cut your toenails as short as possible and never wear the socks around your digs in the morning or evening at all
If you getting holes in your socks from inside your boots then your foot might be or must be moving in the boot a ell of alot .....so its one or the other .

Ah, a Fly Agaric darning thingy, @Pamski. In my young days lots of things were darned - I was always fairly hopeless at it, and took care never to refine my skills.

Let’s face it .. this is not about darning … a pair of good merino socks should last more than a few days - diagnosing why this is happening is vital …

plus get rid of as much hard skin as possible on the base of your feet, I use something that looks a lot like a cheese grater but it is for feet really!

It’s not the nails. It’s under the big toe and on the ball. Touring gear so clearly caused by rubbing / hard skin. Tightening boots not the answer as clips open maximizes range of motion and is just more comfortable for me when skinning.
High finesse darning is well beyond my capabilities so buy ‘em cheap is probably the solution. Alas SP, where I got my excellent Smartwool socks from, no longer ships to CH.
Stance’s guarantee is certainly Interesting. Suspect they may regret it

Do you have well fitted superfeet or bootfitter made custom footbeds ?
The footbeds stabilise the foot in the boot ie help stabilise the foot when made correctly so it doesnt move/swim as much.
If its forefoot movement on the up and you dont have custom footbeds, superfeet if fitted correctly are a affordable option
If its foot movement wearing the bottom of the forefoot sock area out in a touring application ...sometimes touring is what it is on the up and requires outside the box thinking with the very high heat generated in the boot.
I would also change socks for a new fresh pair on arrival or whenever you can ......if thats possible... as its bit of a pain.
I found it was possible during a lunchbreak and it felt so good and so worthwhile once done .
I have only used decathlon short running shoe synthetic socks but in the op,s case perhaps a cheap online decathlon ski sock order may be possible as they are probably on sale now
Might be a stop gap answer .

I used to darn my school socks - over the knee things with quite a bit of wool in them that regularly wore through . Only 40-45 years ago  . Used to get really annoyed with my sister, cos she just threw hers away when they went into holes, and somehow managed to persuade Mum to buy her new ones.

stating the bleedin' obvious (my specialist subject!) Do you wear slippers about the house? My partner goes through a pair of socks about once every few years compared to me, that gets through an entire field in Alabama in no time at all. We've come to the conclusion it's slippers. She wears them and I don't. (OK, so weight might have something to do with it to, but you get the idea!)

That's interesting idea. It could very well be right.
I found I had holes in my ski socks too. Granted, that's after several years. But as I "selectively" use the hole-less ones this year, they soon gotten "holy" on my left foot only! (they've all been worn down from the many year of use so the holes appear rather quicker).
Couple that with the fact that my new boot seem to have a bit of extra space on my left foot, which is half a size smaller than my right, I now suspect there might indeed a relationship between loose boot and "holy" socks!

Assuming your ski boots fit snuggly they won't wear your socks out. Therefore I reckon you need to wear slippers when walking about in them before / after skiing?

Might be different in Europe but here in the home of icebreaker they guarantee the socks for life. Bizarre but if there’s a hole you can go in a shop and swap the skanky old socks for a new pair. Not something they advertise but tight back bottom me has done it a few times.

Would love a trip to NZ but the flight cost might outweigh the savings on a couple of pairs of ski socks

Why would you or anyone have abrasive insoles ?
Insoles help stabilise the foot inside the boot if they are correctly made no one puts a abrasive surface on them .
What your saying is why is my foot moving on top of my abrasive insoles ...its a circle conversation
Bcse if your foots swimming ie. moving in the boot ....your have found the answer

@Tirol 164, ….it’s just a material fact that some older heat moulded insoles have a hard rough surface (some SIDAS, and others), while some insoles and definitely the standard unmoulded insoles have a furry flock surface.
