I know Ryanair are very strict. I know about printing the boarding passes at home, and measuring all backpacks and trolleys.
I don't really want to put my helmet in the checked in suitcase (I've had a helmet ruined this way, came out of the suitcase with a nice dent). I usually carry it hanging from my backpack. Has anybody had any experience with this? I can always put it on my head at check in, but I'd rather not get to that point

I used to do this all the time, various airlines, never questioned.
That said, I've tended to pack in my checked luggage in recent years, and see Ryanair and Easyjet both getting stingier on hand luggage limits recently.
I guess you can always wear the helmet if challenged! I don't think there are any rules against that!

Yeah, thanks, I've never run into any trouble with any airlines, but I never went skiing with Ryanair, who are notoriously stingy, hence my question specifically focused on them

We flew with Ryanair twice in February (Bratislava) and carried our 2 helmets (& Mrs B's Ossur kneebrace) in a(n Asda) carrier bag, in addition to our 2 hand luggages. We had no problem, in either direction.

The question is not really if you can get away with it, but should you? With cabin space at a premium these days, if you are taking up more than your space allowance then someone else can't use all of theirs. Put it into your hold allowance and pack it properly so it doesn't get damaged.

I stick it into my cabin bag and stuff it, I fly with ryanair, I book on skis so I put a lot of stuff in with those and then use my wheelie case for the rest of my stuff. If your cabin bag fits under the seat you have no problems.

Hold up, cabin space is at a premium as people take on bags that are waaaay too big, not a helmet that can a) fit under a seat and b) take up pretty much zero space as you can put your coat or small bag into it.
I will almost never pack it in hold luggage like I wouldn't pack a laptop in hold luggage.

Mine goes in the centre of my hard suitcase, with goggles\low light lens\suncream\buff\spare glasses\tissues\energy bars etc inside ready to ski. I pack everything round it and it survives well. Takes a bit of working out but worth the effort.

As seems to be the norm these days, if someone takes on a cabin bag and a helmet separately then generally, the two combined are bigger than the allotted space allowed. If you only take on a manbag and a helmet then no worries, but what I see mostly is a big cabin bag, plus a carrier bag full of the reqd booze, plus helmet, which is a tad selfish IMO. Sorry, but that's the way I see it.
Me? I take on my skiing rucksack with duty free, sunnies and tablet inside. Pretty much it.

I agree that people with a large cabin bag should not be taking up excess space by adding helmets and duty free into the equation. Like you say, a helmet with a small bag that can fit under the seat if need be is absolutely a non-issue.

Duty free is the problem, not helmets. What would you rather have fall out on to you from an over-stuffed locker - a couple of glass bottles, or a helmet?

I have 5 helmets! Just can’t pack them all! Adults are packed, kids will have to go attached to hand luggage.
