Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Corvara without a car

So much great information on this site, thank you to all. I've just read the recent Dolomite trip reports and thinking of next year. We based in Ortisei this year and very much enjoyed it, especially since we relied on trains/buses/taxis to arrive there. For next year we've been advised by local friends that we should stay in the Corvara area. Next year is also shaping up to be a big family and friends reunion with a mix of ages and skier ability. Looks like getting to Corvara from Bolzano will be about 1+ hour with bus and taxi. How is staying in Corvara without a vehicle? Seems like for those who want to take a day or two off to sightsee or who are not really skiers, it's a long way to get to a train. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

you don't need a car if you're skiing for a week or two but it opens up some more possibilities and it's usually cheaper to hire than get transfers (this year was a bit odd re rental prices as they were quite expensive but normally it's cheaper). Driving in that area is simple, roads are fairly quiet, it's pretty relaxed and not the stereotypical Italian driving experience so do consider renting a car (or two).

During winter there isn't much in Corvara for non skiers except walking etc. there isn't anything to sightsee except nature and most of that is under snow Very Happy

It obviously depends where/what you want to sightsee but IIRC the nearest train stations are ca an hour away (Brunico in the North, Ponte nelle alpi-polpet in the south). Brunico is probably the nearest sightseeing but we've not been there so can't advise.

Allow more than an hour from Bolzano to Corvara, it's ca 30-40 mins drive from Ortisei over a very twisty pass. If you're going from the UK consider flying into Venice/Treviso you can then either rent, private transfer or use the Cortina Express bus. Train wise the nearest station is Brunico and the route from there doesn't involve any passes so is more reliable.

We love that area but TBH it's not the best place for non-skiers unless they're happy in a spa or like walking. It's much smaller than Ortisei and doesn't have that nice small town feel, no town square etc. You could consider Cortina which would probably be better for a mixed group as it's a proper town, it's beautiful but (IMHO) the ski areas aren't well integrated, you can get ski/taxi to Alta Badia/SR for the day though.

Have you considered Kronplatz? ; it is not on the Sella Ronda, but is next door to Brunico and it's railway station. If you go for Corvara, there is a bus service to Brunico

@albob, makes a good suggestion for a mixed group. You can even get a train from Brunico to a Gondola station. Skiing not on the same level as Corvara/Alta Badia but it's a definitely worth considering as a compromise.
