Poster: A snowHead
|
Hi All,
Firstly, a massive thanks again to all snowheads for saving our December ski trip. Without the help from all at the forum, we wouldn't have made it this year.
Now, plans afoot for next year. Really enjoyed Westendorf / Skiwelt and previously have really enjoyed Three Peaks / Dolomites. Also stayed at the Galtenberg in Alpbach and had a great time there too (although preferred the skiing at Skiwelt - what an amazing place).
Looking for a family hotel with a pool for the kids, fairly close (5 mins max walk) to the snow. What I really liked about Westendorf and Versciaco / San Candido area is it's pretty quiet on the snow and lovely off it. Travelling with youngish kids who will be in ski school all day and need a bit of feed and a swim in the evening - no need for much nightlife. Hotel doesn't have to be 5* luxury (probably can't afford 5* luxury!) but definitely needs a pool, family atmosphere and good grub.
Any recommendations for resorts / hotels within an hour or two of Innsbruck? I've been looking at Serfaus but hotels look pretty expensive over that way.
Thanks again for sharing the knowledge!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Thanks so much for both options - will investigate and get some prices. They look spot on.

Have a look at Hotel Stores in San Cassiano in the Dolomites. 3 mins walk too the gondola where you leave your kit. Beautiful pool, great food, family run and popular with families. The resort is very quiet so no nightlife which seems to be ok with your brief. Happy to answer questions if you PM me

We went to Zauchensee this year for our first time with the kids. Stayed in Zauchenseehof. Ski in/out, spacious rooms, good food, swimming pool, kids play area, table tennis, climbing walls etc. couldn’t have gone any better. I will do a full write up at some point.
There are a few other similar hotels in the small village. Nice immediate ski area plus easy links to Flachau and the rest of the Ski Amade.
I’m trying to find somewhere similar for next half term (I rarely go back to the same place twice), but struggling to get something that ticks all the boxes, so may well end up back there.

Thanks very much all - some friends recently returned from a place in Gerlos so going to look at that too.
@pippo9 I can highly recommend the Post Alpina in Versciaco / Three Peaks. Amazing, friendly, family-run hotel. Fantastic food. Lovely indoor / outdoor pool. Great childcare for younger kids. Good skiing right on the doorstep. Very few Brits go to this area but it is really very, very good (only reason we don't go any more is because we've been there a few times and have run out of new slopes to try!). Feel free to PM me if any questions on that one - the Stores in San Cassiano mentioned above looks like a very similar offering.

Just had a look at the Post Alpina and it looks very nice - exactly the kind of thing we're after. How was the skiing in the immediate area? My better half is still a nervous / reluctant skier and so prefers easy blues, but looks like the nearest slopes are mostly red. How did you or the kids find the skiing? Also, how were the queues for the lifts?

So right outside the hotel you have a conveyer belt for the little ones and then a sort of pully drag lift just over the other side of the slope. Beyond that there's a small chair lift that takes you down a kids gentle woodland trail (with Disney type figures amongst the trees) and then back to the hotel area.
Up the very top of the Monte Elmo you have a couple of wide blues and some fairly easy wide reds (the restaurant near the top of the gondola is an amazing place to sit with a view of the Three Peaks). The reds back down to the hotel are a bit trickier (and get churned by the end of the day) but you can get the gondola down from the top (and then either Disney forest chair up and ski back or just walk back over the snow via the pub(s)...).
The best area for nervous / reluctant skiers is called Bad Moos (!). It's got three or four really nice, wide blues (that cross over a couple of very steep blacks). You can either get there via a combo of blues and reds or get the ski bus over. I think there is another Familienhotel type thing over in Bad Moos but not been there. There's also an amazing, very long blue that takes you from the top of Croda Rossa over to Valgrande and you can then get a ski bus from there and try the slopes around Padola. Then get the bus back closer to home. It's not difficult (almost flat at points) but is a trail through the trees so if nervous about thin skiing then don't do that one.
Never had to queue for a lift (we normally go early March). Never met another Brit - it's mostly Italian families. Don't tell anyone about it. Shhhhh.
