You might find car rental is the best.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Not an option, I'm at the airport and my licence is my house, not the best of days today.

Train to Briançon (one end of the Serre Chevalier) ski area, then bus or taxi to your accommodation. It looks like the later trains today might be sold out though.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There's a bus service from Grenoble railway station, but not sure on departure times, I did post it as being at 18.30, but I've looked properly and that was a very long winded train journey. Sorry.

Like @Hells Bells, not sure where you are currently. Looking on Trainline, trains seem very busy in France, with a lot showing as sold out. Geneva isn't that convenient for Serre Chevalier.
Depending on what flights you have available, another option might be Marseilles where there is an 1841 train to Briançon. From research early in the year, it's a short hop on either a bus or local train from the airport to the main Marseilles station.
(Price removed as I realised that was with my rail card which gives ~30% discount.)

I was starting to think that. Even landing at Grenoble or Lyon, the latest transfer options by public transport seem to need you to have landed by around 1600.

Thanks for all the replies, I had already paid for the flights to Geneva before I posted on here so leaving for another day was not an option at the time but looking back might have been a good idea, trains from Geneva were fully booked until I think 16:30 the next day (Monday) but wouldn't arrive in Briancon till Tuesday, I asked a few taxi drivers and was quoted €900-€1000, I was going to book into a hotel but gave it one more go, I spoke to a French transfer driver who was picking up a couple to take to Flaine he said if it was ok with them then he could take us for €450 cash, the deal was done and we arrived at our accommodation about midnight. Thanks for all your quick replies and help.
