We usually do likewise (stay just into France in Calais/St Omer) but a couple of weeks ago stayed this side on the Friday evening and crossed at 6am Saturday (to avoid the inevitable half term build up on the Friday evening at the tunnel).
Stayed at the place below, only cost £35.50 for a family room and was perfectly adequate. Not a locked car park, but lots of cameras and someone on the front desk all night so car felt secure enough.

used Premier Inn at Ashford (eureka Park) and near Outlet village. Both fine for overnight stop - as above no secure parking but cameras and well lit

@ajc2260626, you cannot normally get any safer than the ibis/ibis budget and novotel hotels (all in the same fenced in complex) by cite de europe, last few times i stayed there they were all populated with gendarmes, who had been billeted there because of the migrant camps close by.
though, this was in feb 2020 before covid, so am not sure if they are still there now.

Village Hotel at Maidstone is where I usually stop, it's usually cheap an easy 45 mins drive down to Dover

We've stayed at Travelodge Ashford with a roofbox and 4 bikes on back (although do try and reverse park up against a wall. Been fine.
However better to cross then stop as you've saved the hour add on from time difference.

It is usually too late for us to cross by the time we drive down, but if we lived closer, I would choose to cross first.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@Hells Bells, I'm up near Edinburgh and we cross and then stay in the Holiday Inn at Coquelles, 10 mins from Eurotunnel Calais.

You know it makes sense.

@Matt1959, we couldn't always leave home until 6.30 as we had to leave after work. Half-days were never an option as community pharmacists, so by the time we get to Folkestone there aren't many trains running. Miss one around midnight and your stuffed until 2am. If we had a full day off, we may as well be driving during the day and crossing earlier. Bit easier now we work in GP practices, but only by an hour, so it is still 10.30 by the time we get to the South Coast.
