Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I was just looking at where I cycled today. I went through a village called Le Venon above Grenoble and there were two roads:. le chemin de la vielle pisse (old piss path) this led on to le ch. du Cul Froid (Cold Arse Lane). In this case the pisse is probably a fast running stream (not yellow).

My wife dealt with a case near Megeve in a hamlet called la crotte de la veille dame (old ladies turd)

Then there is Merdassier (shittery) so called because the mountain has had so much sheep grazing the top soil is sheep shit.

Well they amused me, very direct these agricultural types.

@davidof, I like it Smile my son was on a university ski trip to the Tarrentaise and they went past the turn off to Pussy. He pointed out that he had actually been down "Canyon de Pussy" It caused much merriment.

@davidof, not nearly as scatological, there is a reasonably new development (British developer) in Morzine, on ground known as (iirc) "les champs du vents".

Bizarrely the new proprietors spent much of their early residence complaining about how windy it was.

@Boris, you're not the only one. It's a shame the major town on the sign isn't Nice.

We have mates with a house in “La Cote Derrière”, ..”the side behind” might be a polite literal translation. Or, as we might say “the Ar*e end of nowhere”, which is a pretty accurate description of where it is!

@davidof, And now for a slightly more mature answer! I have been trying for years now to sort out what the names of the pistes, lifts and features translate as, here in Tgnes and Val. I have got hold of a copy of a Savoyarde dictionary, a Lo Terrachu Dictionary and with the help of some 'from the archive articles' from the Tignes Parish magazine I am working my way through them, but it does require a bit of imagination as some of the spellings have been 'modern french-ified' such as Lavachey (Savoyarde) becoming Lavachet and many have multilpe meanings.

As for Pisse, I have found it could be the source of something, a spring, a cascade or a waterfall. Interestingly, after Pisse it gives Pissailas as having the same meanings. So maybe the glacier above Le Fornet was seen as the source of the much larger glacier?

There are lots of "Piddles" - for example Piddle Trenthide and Wyre Piddle, in England. The first in Dorset, second in Worcestershire.
