Poster: A snowHead

We decided to go ahead with booking our 4 weeks in the Pyrenees, but the apartment owner in La Mongie / Grand Tourmalet increased the price by over 50%!
So, we have booked a super cheap apartment in Saint Lary. It's a proper town, with a cable car and gondola connection to the 100km ski area, with pistes up to 2500m. Anyone been and got good things to say? If it's all bad don't tell us, as we are committed now

@RobinS, I've been. My family and my brother's family (who live near Biarritz) went, so I'm guessing it must have been UK and one of the French half terms.
It was in 2014 so quite a few years ago, but we enjoyed it. It's obviously not the alps, but it was good. Plenty of runs to keep you occupied and a decent sized snow park, if you're into that sort of thing. I don't recall it being that busy, so I'd expect it to be deserted if you're not going at half term. I was mightily impressed by the amount of snow there. Don't know if that was just a bumper year or not, but there was bags of the stuff.
Put it this way, I wouldn't mind going back again some time.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Timmycb5, Thanks, good to hear it's not terrible! From the ridiculously cheap accommodation (just over £600 for four weeks) it's obviously not in great demand outside of school holidays. Pyreneen resorts do often get huge snowfall so we are hopeful for a good time.

I spent a couple of days there on a Pyrrennean tour a few years ago. Some excellent runs, some slow lifts (some of which might well have been replaced) and a nice, if modern, village. Gets busy at weekends.
Gobsmacked at how much cheaper things like eating out and ski hire were than in the French Alps.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@countryman, Thanks, slow lifts are no problem if there isn't a queue. And

Is just the sort of thing we like to hear. We are hoping our four weeks will cost less than most people spend on a one week holiday.

Sorry can't comment on skiing, but we spent a week in the summer couple of years ago to watch the Tour. It's a beautiful town with a good variety of places to eat out, hire shops and a couple of supermarkets. I would agree that it seemed remarkably cheap to eat out and seemed to offer very good value for money. We have added it to our list of places we would like to ski in the future.

We have been there in summer too. The highlights of my holiday were going up the Pic du Midi (not sure how easy it is to drive there from St Lary in winter) and a trip to a nearby spa at Loudenvielle https://www.balnea.fr/

I'm thinking of visiting Saint Lary on an upcoming trip in early March and maybe combining with Grand Tourmalet over 6 days skiing. I hear reports of some slow lifts and lifts that don't connect together very well in Saint Lary. How true is this or will it matter much outside holidays and weekends?
