A travel insurance tip for those looking to ski in the US or Canada, having spent hours trawling through insurance term booklets.
In Europe, there is the Piste, and then there is Off-Piste, which is outside of the recognised, marked runs. Literally next to the piste, it is off-piste. There is no concept really of “outside/within resort boundaries”.
In America (USA and Canada) there are the pistes (AKA groomed runs), there is off piste within resort boundaries, and there is skiing outside of resort boundaries. Oftentimes, the off piste within resort boundaries effectively functions like a completely un-groomed piste, and is always still patrolled by ski patrol, has been avalanche controlled etc. Outside of the resort boundaries is a different matter, and higher risk.
Most insurers won’t cover any off piste, within resort boundaries nor out of bounds, or they require a guide.
The exception, and finally we come to the tip, is the Post Office, where the terms must have been written by an enlightened person who has been skiing over in North America. Their winter sports cover covers all skiing within resort boundaries. I found my deal on moneysupermarket, tho perhaps you can also go direct.
For Europe, you still need specialist insurance if you are going off piste (I’d recommend Snowcard for this; there is a whole thread on this), given that as soon as you step off the piste you are effectively outside of resort boundaries. Which I find so strange.
Thoughts/feedback welcome!
