Hi folks, I am taking my kids 10 and 11 for their first ski trip in April, I haven't been for 15 years either!
I have booked a location very close to the bruyeres gondala.
I have my flights and will try and sort transfers from Geneva airport
I wondered if anyone had any hints and tips or experience of this location and ideas or recommendations for ski school as my boys have never been skiing before. I may take them to the hemel Hempstead snow dome for a bit of a crash lesson
Anyway I am super excited now I have taken the plunge as have been thinking about it for a couple of years

Well the first point would be that the Bruyeres gondola is in Les Menuires, not Val Thorens. So where exactly are you staying?

I was looking at VT for easter, but I think the various universities & varsities have booked everything out

Hi thanks for the responses I haven't fully booked the accommodation, it's whittled down to either properly up in VT or an apartment in les Belleville near the gondola bubble bruyeres, it's taken my fancy but dunno if that's genuinely a good location
Any thoughts on being down a bit (4km according to the map) or basing up at VT?

VT is by far a better area for teaching beginners than LM, especially late season. In LM you'll have to take the bus down to the croisette if you want a British ski school. Depends where you are in VT if it's a walk or a bus but for sure it's better all round.

And getting them to learn the basics at a snowdome before going is an absolute must. Will increase their enjoyment of the holiday exponentiallly.

@Tommycricket, which week are you looking at in April? There is the Spring Families Bash happening week beginning 6th April which might be worth a look if it's that week.

To expand a bit, LM is a sun trap and Bruyeres suffers more than anywhere. It's a good location for experienced skiers but for novices in spring, no way. The slush will kill their enjoyment and they may never want to ski again. Go to VT, that's one of the best resorts in the world for late season skiing, whatever your level.

If they are beginners they won't have any experience of varying snow conditions so will think slush is normal. We learned to ski on icy hardpack in Cairngorm and knew no different. We loved it!
Snow is snow to a beginner, so they are unlikely to be put off. Either they will love skiing (regardless of the snow) or not.

Couldn't disagree more. Icy hardpack is far easier to teach on than slush.

And in any case, you're missing the main point. VT has a dedicated beginners area, a network of magic carpet lifts and a progressive circuit off the Deux Lacs lift. It's way more appropriate than LM for a first holiday. You've spent enough time there and you know that full well.

The Oxalys is in a brilliant location, with a nice pool. I'll be there the following week for the EoSB. The advantage of the family bash would be other families to socialise and ski with. If you have any questions, it's worth posting them on the family bash thread as there are several people in there who've been before.

Will look to book a lesson at a snow dome and decide whether my 10 and 11yr olds wanna try asking vs boarding!! (me and the wife shall stick to the skis)
I will research what's easiest I guess as can't let them decide!!
I will go with ski school too when we are out there most likely
