Poster: A snowHead

Hello! Looking for somewhere for a child-free long weekend at the very start of April, and suffering decision paralysis!
I'm a snowboarder, hubby a skier, both v competent (happy to do some cruising, but like something more challenging too, and will cover a small resort area pretty quickly).
Not fussed about nightlife - most important thing is good snow and not too long a transfer (ideally under 3 hrs) to maximise ski time. Been toying with Flaine or Avoriaz, but not sure what snow will be like, or whether the ski area will be too small. Classic late season French resorts feel a little too far for a weekend, and wondering whether Austria or even Switzerland would be better - seem to be no Innsbruck flights then though so would have to be Munich or Geneva. All suggestions much appreciated!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

We done Flaine for 3 1/2 days at the beginning of April a few years ago plus its only just over a hour from Geneva
We had every snow condition over the 3 days
Day 1 firm up top got a little soft nearer the bottom
Day 2 Fresh snow over night and most of the morning
Day 3/4 Hard compact piste all day
I would go there again

Renting a car and driving to Val Thorens is particularly good value for a short trip, as renting a car will cost a lot less than for a week, whereas transfers will cost the same for 3 days as for 3 weeks. Just be aware that finding the exact accommodation you want, for odd periods, might be difficult. Having a car will greatly increase your choice, as you could stay in a valley town and drive up to wherever the snow is best! However you travel, getting much worthwhile skiing done on your travelling days isn't easy - but that, too, is easier if you are driving yourself and in complete control of timings.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@Dreamingofsnow, Fly to Zürich and take the train to St Anton, station is in the middle of the village. It is really easy, much better than flying to Munich and lots more flights than Innsbruck. Ischgl also good that time of year but travel not so easy as a fair way down a remote valley, about 3 hours drive from Zürich

@Dreamingofsnow, from Geneva for good skiers/boarders, get the train to Le Châble and ski Verbier for the weekend. If you’re not fussed on nightlife stay in Le Châble for lower accommodation costs. You want height and North facing in April and Verbier has both. Consider Zermatt if you don’t mind a longer rail transfer and have deeper pockets.

If you are going for a weekend then I wouldn't have thought the size of the resort would be an issue. And, in fact, for me I would be looking at it as an opportunity to hit something smaller than I might ordinarily go for a week.
Also a question - does more challenging mean piste or off piste?
Did a weekend in Chamonix once - was able to get an evening flight out and back - and the transfer iirc was 1 hour so iirc 4 full ski days (Thu-Mon)

Early morning Swiss flight from Heathrow to to Zurich, train to Engelberg via Lucerne (or rent a car and drive - about an hour door to door). Late flight back.

Avoriaz will be tip top then and plenty of ski area for you both. The new hotel Mil8 would be a good shout to stay child free.
