I need to insure my son for a tip to Hintertux and I'm struggling to find any insurance options, so any advice would be welcome.
Single trip for 14 days.
Son is UK resident and 14 years old.
Will be travelling to Austria from Canada and returning to Canada after the trip.
Will be competing and training in Tux, as a non-professional.
The big stumbling block is not travelling from the UK, which removes all the UK ski specialist policies. Also being a UK resident removes the possibility of being insured from any of the Canadian companies that I've enquired with.
I'm not fussed about the minor travel insurance things like baggage, delays etc. just want to cover the costs associated with a major accident and extended hospital stay.

@doddsie, can the organisation providing the training not advise you? Is he unaccompanied? That might also make things more difficult.

@doddsie, can you insure the whole trip, i.e. UK-Ca-Au-Ca-UK?

Hells Bells - He's training with a Canadian team that get insured through their National body, so they've no experience of insuring a foreign national.

@doddsie, it may be worth calling one of the insurance companies to see what they can offer given the circrumstances. Skicover answered my queries when i called them.
(also note, I'm moving this to The Piste as it's not actually about off-piste and may thus get more views)

|
|
NBT - I contacted a few of the UK companies who the ski racing kids use and they all said they can't offer any policies that aren't in/out of the UK.

@doddsie, maybe worth having a look at Austrian alpine club (uk) - membership includes annual insurance (but check t&cs carefully as while it’s good for rescue and medical repatriation etc maybe less good for general travel delays lost baggage etc)

Inboard - I have looked, but couldn't find their insurance T&C's. I was slightly worried about their level of medical cover and would need to check the fine print regarding any skiing/competing exclusions.

Gap year insurance?
IIRC my Amex platinum travel insurance covers dependents for up to 365days/yr in a single trip, and includes winter sports.

Gap year insurance - All seem to exclude ski competitions or under 18's.
Amex travel trips have to start and finish in resident country.

Yes he's got a GHIC, but they won't let him train/compete without insurance.

You know it makes sense.

@doddsie, it might be worth contacting the insurance company behind the AAC cover (details on the leaflet somewhere) as they offer various extensions to the basic cover eg longer than 8 weeks, greater ranges and might be willing to look at extending to cover competitions

You could try marshsport.co.uk who provide cover for GB Snowsport, Snowsport England etc. I think the basic policy assumes start and end in the UK but would probably cover the extended trip.

Would it be bonkers for him to come to the UK for one night and travel from here?

Marshsport said no. He could come via the Uk and return from the UK, but that would mean changing flights and buying extra flights and not travelling with the team. Probably the last resort and expensive both financially and time wise.

Have you tried speaking to BIBA?

I quickly looked at a few, but you needed to be a German or Austrian resident. If anyone knows of a more flexible company, then please let me know and I’ll enquire.

I think you can join the AAC from anywhere outside of the UK where you have to join the UK branch.

AAC excludes training and competitions.

OK then you'll have to kick it back to his club in Canada. If they are of the size/ importance to go training in Austria I'd be highly surprised if they haven't had any international kids to deal with before.
Alternately just rely on GHIC and be prepared to get the credit card out should he need a heli taxi ride.

Have you tried an insurance broker? For other things I've used Andrew Smart at Dennis Watkins & Co Ltd.

World nomads? Covers gap years and non uk originating trips. Don’t know about non professional race training though.

I think I tried Nomads, may have been an age problem.
Have just spoken to a UK company who think they can insure him, but I’ll have to wait until Monday when he’s confirmed with the broker.

His school have him covered under a temporary International Students medical insurance, until his MSP kicks in and then he can get SAIP through freestyle Canada.

Is joining the Österreichischer Skiverband an option, & would that provide or give access to the relevant cover?
Or is there an approximate equivalent of Assurski that’s valid in Austria?
