I want to book another 'last minute' trip for mid season, but really I want the colder temps and better snow conditions of early jan. Any ideas when the low temps etc will return?

Seems to be the new normal for the last 3-4 years. January now gets March temperatures, and March gets January’s snow.
I always went skiing in mid-January because it was colder and therefore quieter, and no issues with hotels or restaurants etc etc. Where I skied the roads/paths were always snow covered, and roofs had 30-50cm of snow, and the temperature rarely broke zero in January. The last time I was at this resort in Jan 2020 it was +7C during the day and above zero at night in the village, walking down the street it was like summer with the roads and verges completely snow free, and only the occasional snow blower heap of snow to remind you that it was supposed to be winter. This was at 1800m

@PowderAdict, whilst that means a fairly rubbish trip for my lads weekend next weekend, it bodes well for my early Easter family ski week if it comes to fruition.

Worrying isn't it. I've come to the conclusion that March, overall, is the best month to ski in Europe if you're reasonably high. Of course all generalisations are dangerous including this one

People who visit Les Arcs for months each year were noting how busy Jan was compared to the 10+ years they've been going.
Thoughts as to why were....
Jan is no longer freezing cold, to the point of being unpleasant, so "fair weather"skiers visit earlier in the year.
Later months are too warm/no snow or if there's snow the skiable hours are contracted.

@Scamper, I know loads of people who have skied before and have been or about to go on their first skiing holiday since covid. I will be arriving in arc 2000 next friday with a group of 8 work colleagues of which 6 fit that description, 1 a beginner and me. Its going to get colder friday night, the cannons will be on flat out all night and bashed out ready for me on Saturday

T-shirt weather at 1500m today.
Jan is the new Jun.
Some forecasts suggesting -20c in the Western Alps in a couple weeks.
But unlikely to be sustained. The world is too hot at the moment.

The twitter post is from a Dutch expat in CH, who is a reliable weather amateur.
The main GFS run predicts a sharp decline in temperature around 7 February. But this main run was an outlier. OTOH this has been in the charts for 3 runs now.
Hope it gets confirmed in the coming 36 hours.

GFS doesn’t show any new snow for the Alps up to the 4 Feb, also on wetter3.de up to 6 Feb.
I was educated on Snowheads that forecasts beyond that time frame have little merit.

Ive been in L2A this week. Leave tomorrow. Its been like late March all week.
Luckily conditions over 2000m are excellent but even that could do with a freshen after today which has been tshirt weather in resort.
I hope all areas get some serious neige pdq
