Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski resort decide to honor a 50 year old lift pass voucher

 Poster: A snowHead

"Hey @altaskiarea are these 54 year old gift certificates still good???" wrote Ryan Kendrick in a Threads post, sharing an image of two vouchers that looked like something you'd find in a candy bar before receiving an invitation to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

It was a long shot, to be sure, but it paid off.

"Seeing as there's no expiration date, we'd be more than happy to honor these with two lift tickets this season," replied Alta Ski Area. All Kendrick needed to do was swing by the ticket office.

Alta also provided a little history lesson, noting that in the year these certificates were issued—1970—day passes at the resort were $7(!), and it was the only ski area in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Snowbird, Alta's neighbor, opened a year later in 1971.

All told Alta's decision to honor Kendrick's vouchers is pretty shocking. Sure, they don't have an expiration date, but they are 54 years old.

But hey, a little goodwill goes a long way—plus, it makes a killer story.

Seeing Alta still haven't moved on since the 1970s, why shouldn't they honour a voucher from then?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

“Move on”, to what?

@abc, from their "Authentic Skier Experience"... although I must correct that Alta didn't ban snowboarding until 1984... so maybe Kendrick could bust out an old 70s Winterstick and claim grandfather rights.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

No expiry date or other t&cs limited their use then they should be honoured if genuine, as I’m sure the resort knew.

At least they didn’t make it hard to redeem or make the holders jump through hoops despite their obligation unlike some shithouse organisations that would. So good on them for that, and it does make for a nice story.

@Richard_Sideways, I should have known better from the handle… “_sideway” rolling eyes rolling eyes rolling eyes

As a skier, I confess I LOVE skier only mountains. The moguls are in much better shape. So I’m immensely grateful Alta didn’t “move on”. Laughing Laughing

(That said, I skied Taos both before and after snowboarding is allowed. Noticed very, very few boarder there despite it allowing boarding. I suspect it’s likely be similar had Alta go the way of Taos)

Think there are only 3 left now - Alta, Deer and, iirc something like Thunder Valley? The irony is that a lot of the early development of the Winterstick did take place at Alta and Snowbird, and Alta was one of the few mountains which did accept snowboards back in the 70s.

Anyway your primary concern at these mountains these is being taken out by Gwyneth Paltrow... which I believe now happens to around 38% of all skiers at those resorts annually.

Stay safe out there.

Using the US inflation calculator, that’s the equivalent of $56.

Online now a day pass costs $164, demonstrating winter sports above the norm inflation, as in Europe.

But don’t get Snowheads started on all the US lift pass deals you can get, there are long threads on the subject Laughing

Deer Valley offered him tickets at their place before Alta had even replied! Laughing

I've got to say...what a brilliant bit of marketing for Alta.

But If they still ban snowboards I'd never go there unless, in the interests of fairness, all the skiers still slide in straight planks over 2m long...no modern carvers allowed! (I'm a skier.)

There’re “Retro Day” in various mountains from time to time. Just look for it.
