Poster: A snowHead

I was wondering if anyone is planning to ski in Aviemore or the Nevis range in January?
Planning to go up jan 20-25th but so far it looks like just the lower beginner slopes are open.

Are you aware of the train situation?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Planning for Scotland needs to be pretty short term. Wouldn’t worry too much about lack of runs at the moment, plenty of snow has fallen recently so hopefully a good base building

Assume you are referring to the funicular at Cairngorm? Being out of action means just use the tow lifts

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

@poppyb, Unfortunately at the moment that is all that is open, it impossible to say what it will be like by the 20th January you could be lucky and have great snow or it could have turned mild with warm winds stripping the snow of the hills. At the moment I would say the Lecht has the most open with some longer runs, its about an hour from Aviemore. https://www.lecht.co.uk/

One day you can have 12c then cold and snow then back to warm. Really unpredictable.
Eg here is the Lecht on Friday.

There is a chance they will have a bit more going by then but not guaranteed. It's drag lifts only at Cairngorm this season and they also charge full price even if it's the smallest of beginners areas open.
Who is in your group? All snow dependent of course but Glenshee offers the best variety of slopes, Lecht is good for beginners and young kids, Glencoe has the steepest runs and biggest vertical but also a nice flat mid mountain.

But yeah as others have said..if you are booking in advance don't count on skiing being available.

It’s not quite as simple as that, because terrain that could be open is not because they appear to be sticking to the policy of not operating uplift on the mid / upper mountain unless the full length of the Carpark T-bar is available (or the Fiacaill Ridge Poma with a viable route down). Wind permitting the Top Basin would ordinarily be open, a route to mid-mountain though not great would be viable. If the M1 Poma up track fencing was in better nick, it would help too, but the fact is the M1 Poma and Top Basin could have been open a fair bit already this season if there was the will to do so. It has not gone unnoticed by pass holders on Facebook that they are only running snow cannons at the bottom of the Carpark T-bar, wouldn’t want to get the full thing running and actually open as a ski area rather than a beginner snow park would they?

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

This is without doubt the case. I get the feeling that Glenshee are leaning this way too. Glencoe and Lecht seem more interested in opening more of the ski area.
