Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Does anyone have any experience of driving to Garmisch ski resort in Germany?
I'm in north Germany at the moment and am considering driving down to Garmisch (south Germany very near the border with Austria). I had the impression it might be a reasonably flat and stable drive to approach the town of Garmisch, ie no scarey steep mountain roads, no need for snow chains, fancy snow tyres etc etc (of which I have zero and zero experience of either).
So does anyone know this area at all? Or got any information about the Garmisch approach roads? I'm hoping it wouldn't be too dissimilar to driving around anywhere else in the rest of Germany and that I could do it in my big clunky UK motorhome, without any special considerations, ie specialist winter/snow tyres and chains and the like.
I may of course be completely wrong on this
so just wondered if anyone could offer any input?
Thanks.

Are you really already in Germany without winter/all season tyres?
If so, be very careful you don't have an accident as your insurance is likely invalid and you'd also probably be prosecuted!!!
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Nick M
, given that all vehicles in Germany are required to have winter tyres if they are driven in "winter" conditions you should have no problems (not having them risks a big fine, even if you are nowhere near the mountains). The roads in the deep south are no different to those in the north. The biggest issue with driving to Garmisch is the risk of traffic jams on the 30 ish kms between the end of the autobahn and the town itself (bypass tunnels are being built but it will be a few years yet). Garmisch is more a town with some nearby skiing than a ski resort town, a perfectly pleasant spot.
