Poster: A snowHead

Is there a good place to buy ski boots in the North East?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

@Fistral, LD Mountain Centre in Newcastle used to have a good ski boot department.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I bought mine at the ski shop at Xscape Castleford, I have quite protruding ankle bones & always had pain on the inner ankle bone for 20+ years of skiing in off the shelf boots, hire boots were/are a no go area. Just a young ish guy that fitted a pair of Salomon boots, padded out the pressure points on my feet, shells & liners in the oven then put the boots on & "freeze" the hot shells into the new shap with ice packs.
They are a very comfortable boot that never give me pain, sometimes cold feet if I tighten them too much, not sure if it is a good sign that I can cut the blood supply to my feet without it actually hurting

A bit further south but Glide and Slide in Otley did a good job for my kids, and Backcountry UK (also now in Otley) are great for touring/backcountry boots but no piste clobber these days.

@andy from embsay, I knew Backcountry were in Ilkley but hadn't realised that they were now in Otley, whereabouts are they? Walked around Otley on Saturday and didn't see them.

Backcountry UK, The Sorting House Wharfe Bank Business Centre, Ilkley Rd, Otley LS21 3JP
Out of town - great google reviews.

I can highly recommend these ....http://www.rivingtonalpine.co.uk/ but they are over near Bolton, a 2 hour drive, but in my opinion worth the drive, as we did from Nottingham.

Ah Yes, it's where Buon Apps used to be, might pay a visit even though I'm not a back country guy.
Should have said Glide and Slide fitted my last pair of boots and did a good job.

@stevew, just re-read my post and you could take it that Backcountry are still in Ilkley as well as Otley - they closed the Ilkley shop when they moved. New shop is much bigger with decent parking. They seem to do a lot of fell walking boots as well as touring clobber.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I think we're on the same page. Backcountry were in the unit next to Majestic Wines in Ilkley, I think sharing with a bike shop, I do remember the guy saying he was moving to Otley. If they do walking boots I might take a look as I need a new pair of light weight summer boots ...wrong season I know.

@stevew, ah that’s right. They were originally on the Burley side of the traffic lights, then they moved in with the bike shop (before Wheelbase bought it).
They seem to have an equally good reputation for fitting walking boots so definitely worth a look.

Thanks for the tip. I had new boots fitted by Frazer this week. Excellent service. He even gave me a "Snowheads discount".
