Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Even before the retour d'est started, there was already a very nice baseload of snow.

I kid you not, fresh from an Italian weather forum, prediction for the region around Sestriere until the end of the retour d'est is over 175 mm of precipitation Shocked
Those purple colours on the precipitation maps are not exactly a weekly occurrence

@Onnem, think you should really study the charts and weather patterns/forecast more Laughing

This particular low was never forecast to hang around like some in the past.

The Genoa Low that produces the Retour Est has now dissipated and it did not produce, especially lower down in the valleys anything too substantial.

Exhibit A Prali this morning, even at altitude it's probably only 30cm, also looking at other webcams that the snow has compacted a fair amount which suggests that temps rose afterwards.

Abries is a very similar picture.

No doubt there will be click-bait images that you and others will fall for, which I suspect that Sestriere one above is, when you compare it to the actual this morning Laughing

Anyway still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick and if I was over there think I'd be heading up Sestrierre way for some piste touring.

Yes, it was a forecast, not actual measurements. Later I saw a graph of actual precipitation. For some reason most of the precipitation fell on the lower foothills.

Edit: link to the FB post by CMP with actual precipitation graph.

Exception to the rule, no snow on this one.

But what a PHENOMENAL photo.

@Onnem, you're not concentrating, are you?

Another one is incoming Laughing

And this one is a more classic Retour as, currently, it's hanging around for 2-3 days, although this is not such a concentrated Genoa Low looking at the various charts, but whatever, it's again very localised to the Queyras and Piemonte.

I don't have the luxury to spend 7*24 on snowheads. Or any wintersports-related site, that is. Laughing
