Grippy snow, not too busy, even a few snowheads, great to be back on skis.

Hi Skids!
I did try and book in last week but there was no slots available ... I think..
Some excuse for not being there.
The conditions look great!
Looking forwards to see you all soon!

It was good to be sliding there this morning, and see some familiar snowHeads again! Hope Hemel continues to stay open this summer, even restricted like that, so we can get our fixes . . . .

Masks/face covering to be worn, only optional when sliding down the slope at present.

@adithorp, to be fair, it shouldn't be up to business to mollycoddle people and police them every step of the way. People should know by now and, as long as business put things in place to allow/encourage, I think it's enough.
They've got a one way system, they've got reduced slope numbers and reduced lifts etc. I think they can only do so much.

By limiting capacity to 50% or less, they're allowing more space for people, and beyond that it's up to people to stay in their bubbles.

^+1.
Nearly all people self-manage it now, which is how it has to be to work anyway.
On entry, I was told something I thought was the main change:
- no socialising in the café;
- order your drinks etc. as before but now -
- take them out to the car park, and have them there . .
OK by me.
I'd arrived with a thermos anyway.
Maybe they'll stick with that, maybe not.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, anyone over 11 should wear face covering from entering to leaving
Odd one. Recall in gyms that mask doesn't have to be worn when doing the activity.
@anarchicsaltire, optional when sliding down the slope at present.
Makes much more sense.

@colinstone, i've never been in a gym (shut it @adithorp ) but get the impression they're a lot warmer so the mask would feel more restrictive. Can't see too big a deal with wearing one tbh, after this much time I'd have thought most of us are pretty used to them.

Could be an issue for glasses wearers -mine are steaming up sitting outside in the sun at +12°C!
Will see on Thu afternoon....

It was actually the situation on the last day before they closed (the one day before lockdown when the area was in tier 3, or whatever it was!), it's a consequence of government rules only allowing hospitality venues to do take away / outdoors dining/ drinking. Once restrictions are relaxed in that regard I'm sure you'll be able to eat/drink inside again (even if not socialise with people from outside your bubble whilst doing so). Before going into tier 3 they were doing table service only with fewer tables and order / pay from your mobile.
That's my personal understanding at least.

Totally agree and wasn't my point. Perhaps I shouldn't be so cryptic...
I'd expect people to know about social distancing by now!

^^. @adithorp knows nowt. In fact all three of us were on the one pair of skis and we spent the whole morning going up and down the slope like that. An excellent drill for the intermediates. Sod the distancing.

You don't need stamina on an indoor slope: only takes a few seconds to ski down, then two minutes rest going up.
I'll be there on Tuesday, 10-12.00

We are going there on Sunday with kids, can’t wait. It is our “ski holiday” thus year. Wondering if they would let me to take them on a training slope just for the first go, just for them to remember how to ski a little ( they should be fine on the main slope after that) . Also are there any places to eat with outdoor seating not far from there, would be nice to eat out for a change if the rumours about this being possible again are even true ( haven’t left my home office in ages;) ?

Was going to go up on Sunday but realised that a 4hr e/w journey isn't really 'local' so going to wait a bit. Was very, very tempted because I'm desperate to get skiing, but just decided it's not for me right now. On the bright side, by the time I do go then my new skis should have arrived and I can give them a go.

@Bella2015, Jarmans park just up the road from the snow centre, turn left then left again when leaving, then you will see a big tesco superstore. it has a Nando's with outside seating and one or two other eateries (you may need to pre-book), as well as a mcd's!!!
not sure about using the training slope though, as it is reserved for lessons, but you may be lucky

@Bella2015, It is very unlikely that your kids would be allowed on the nursery slope. That slope is reserved for Snowcenter Instructors and their clients. Even external level 4 instructors are not usually allowed to use the slope! Additionally, since it's a weekend and the first one since they reopened, I suspect the slope will be at maximum (Covid rules) capacity as well. Your best bet might be to dismount the button lift just above the first pylon and take them down from there to practice. It might be worth chatting to the piste patrol before for advice. Note that the slope is slightly shallower from the mid point down.
|
|
|
|
|
|
There are no midway exit points on the lifts now, but good idea to speak to slope patrol before, rather after, things unravel. They do their best to help people regain their ski legs and are used to the problem. If it’s sunny the grass at the top of the car park is a decent picnic place.

@anarchicsaltire, @blueski2, thank you this is helpful to know . I hope they should be ok. The youngest skied confidently blues and even some reds last Christmas so hopefully still remembers something. The older one is/was around 3 star ESF level so should be fine even after a long break
