Not that I’m averse to a bit of skinning but I’m looking forward to being able to do laps on the Grand Montets (Argentiere) . Does anyone know if it is likely to be open in time for or during the 21/22 season?

haven't even published detailed plans yet ...afaik.
last I heard it's at least 3 years out. At least.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I reckon it will remain 3 years away for another 3 years. Feels like CdMB is chasing a rainbow here...
By which time the glacier will have receded a bit further, and the absence of the annual infill of the bergschrund will mean that the long-debated (even before the fire) fundamental re-positioning of the top station might be necessary.

I don't really understand this. How does the best area at a globally famed resort not get the timely investment and execution to make it happen. Did they end up uninsured on the fire so there's a financial barrier or is it politics/ disorganisation?

You'll need to Register first of course.

@Dave of the Marmottes, they have 3 or 4 insurers and one is holding out presumably suggesting it's someone else's liability.

@under a new name, I remember the suggestion that the original roofing contractor's professional indemnity limit was unlikely to be sufficient to rebuild an entire cable car system.

I’ve skied around the Chamonix valley a fair bit over the last 30 years. The whole circus has never struck me as being run by strategic thinkers, slick operators or anything resembling a progressive organisation.
In some ways, that’s been part of its attraction. Their shambolic attempts at joining up the different mountains deter many recreational snowsports participants. You tend to be left with the keener, more adventurous, types.
The downside is that, when something major goes wrong, the means to put it right quickly are far less likely to there. They’ll probably knock 20% off skinning equipment rental for the next 3 seasons while they try to get their act together.

@PeakyB, who are “they”? CdMB don’t have much to do with setting rental prices

@under a new name, good question. The mysterious powers that be and local influencers who have steered the Chamonix snowsports experience to where it is today.
I wouldn’t like to cross them

From a beurocratic standpoint yes, from an engineering one, no. To put it simply a competent construction company would have had the Telepherique open the same year it burned down!
