It looks like we will have reciprocal health care arrangements:
118. In addition, the Protocol will ensure necessary healthcare provisions –akin to those provided by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme – continue. This means individuals who are temporarily staying in another country, for example a UK national who is in an EU Member State for a holiday, will have their necessary healthcare needs met for the period of their stay.
What will happen from 2021?
The deal on the future relationship between the EU and the UK was announced on 24 December. It says that all EHIC cards issued before the end of 2020 will be valid until their expiry date.
After that, the UK will issue a new card. The UK government says the new card will be called the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), but there are no further details yet on how to obtain it.
Like EHIC, the new card will cover chronic or existing illnesses and routine maternity care as well as emergencies.

The Brexit agreement says any specialised treatment, such as dialysis or cancer treatment, "must be subject to a prior agreement between the insured person and the unit providing the treatment" to ensure the treatment is available.
Thanks to Maureen and Tom on Wildcamping for the find.

Sounds like BoJo has pulled off a cracking international health care deal!

Global like the World Series?
Assuming this is fully reciprocal, good news for those of us with EHICs issued by other nations but who (would under normal circumstances) regularly visit the UK too.

Gosh. All that ‘health tourism’ from not only the EU, but the rest of the world. The Daily Mail are going to need some more headline writers.

My thoughts exactly. If I should need medical attention in a US hospital all I need do is show my 'Global' Health Insurance Card that BoJo is introducing and all will be sorted.*
* Or maybe not.

I found that our EHIC cards expired in November 2020. The relevant government website stated we could renew them and so we did, received in just a couple of days, and now looks as if they might be more useful than just the scenario of still being valid if we had travelled before the end of December 31st 2020.

@under a new name, that may well be so, but rather than having just 'European' in its name it will now have 'Global'. Though anyone taking the dictionary definition of "relating to the whole world, worlwide" may be slightly disappointed.

ahem,
If it is global, then yes it is.
EHIC was only ever use in the EU.
Break your arm in France, EHIC cover you
Break your arm in America & EHIC does not cover you

Government use of the E word is now evidently banned, for fear of upsetting the 52%. Replacing it with "Global" seems to more accurately (but no doubt unwittingly) refer to the regions of the planet whereby the uk is now referred to as "who?".

Could countries like New Zealand, Australia and even Canada be added to the scheme? With reciprocal agreements in place of course...

we wait & see... but maybe when they see the associated cost, it will only be for countries with reciprocal schemes.
It seems that the GHIC is going to be at least equal to the EHIC

I think it needs to be the GmmotGHIC
GlobalmissingmostoftheGlobeHealthInsuranceCard.
Somebody care to bring the UK government before the ASA pretty please? (oh wait, they'd be there permanently)

We already have reciprocal health care arrangements with Australia and New Zealand so that's covered.
Not Canada though.

I thought we already had some reciprocal agreements for emergency treatment (but not existing conditions) including Australia and New Zealand.

I'll have check, but I believe the EHIC was valid in places outside the EU but still in Europe. It was not an EU system.

I think the change of name is similar to the change of passport name from European to British. It severs links with a change of name, rather than anything more significant. Could be a mad rush for people to renew EHIC cards. Luckily I got mine renewed which expires on 5/11/2025.
Same with driving licence, my photocard expired and the website said because of covid I did not have to renew it for 11 months. I decided to renew anyway, as they were probably not overloaded with applications since people did not have to renew. Really quick return, and same for EHIC card.

@holidayloverxx, my card hasn't expired yet, but I did try to complete the application form and see if I could extend it, but it wouldn't let me do it. not because of the expiry, but it mentions 'new EHIC'.

Lad broke his arm in Aus 8 or so years ago, produced his EHIC and that was the end of it.
Need to be careful in Aus as the Ambulance in some states is a charity and nor state provided. Aussie family and friends in Queensland pay a membership of the Ambulance each year.

I've just noticed this on the NHS website
Quote: |
Using a new UK EHIC from 1 January 2021
Some people may be able to get a new UK-issued EHIC, which will remain valid after 1 January 2021.
You can apply if you're:
an EU, Swiss, Norwegian, Icelandic or Liechtenstein citizen living in the UK by 31 December 2020
a UK State Pensioner or receiving some other exportable benefits, and you have a registered S1 form or E121
a frontier worker (someone who works in one state and lives in another) by 31 December 2020, for as long as you continue to be a frontier worker in the host state, and you’re eligible for an S1 form or E106
a worker posted to work in another EU country, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland by your UK employer, where the country has agreed to let the posting continue
an eligible family member or dependant of one of the above
a UK student studying in the EU by 31 December 2020
Apply now for your new EHIC
|
I think I will claim my UK state pension.
|
|
|
|
|
|
I don't want to p155 on anyones chips, but I have looked at the European Commission published version of the Treaty, and it doesn't mention EHIC, except for British citizens who are already resident in the EU27.
