When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

A bit of an unusual race but, given the problems suffered by the Country, all power to the organisers!


The Bamyan Ski Club organise an annual 'back country' race in the Koh-e-Baba Mountain Range of Afghanistan

COURSE
Uphill, Downhill, Exact course varys. Overall Distance: 2-4 Kilometers, Overall difference in altitude: 600-1200 Meters. Lowest Point: around 2600, Highest Point around 3800.


RULES
NO WEAPONS allowed. Shocked Shocked

Everyone starts at the same time. The winner is the first person to cross the finish line having successfully registered at all the check points along the way. Skis and Snow Boards are allowed.

As someone that's been to a different region of Afghanistan, I can tell you there are plenty of safe areas (generally the mountains are all Taliban free). There are also other places that I would say are incredibly dangerous. Bamyan is the former, there have not been issues there for a long time. While I would never say anywhere in Afghanistan is 100% safe, bamyan is probably no more dangerous than your average big European city.

For backcountry skiing (they do have a couple of resorts too) Kyrgyzstan has all the adventure with much less hassle and cost than Afghanistan.
